At very least $2300 after taxes a month....to cover food, shelter, hygiene items, electric, phone, car maintenance, gas and liability insurance.

Beth
It depends on where they live. But probably at least $1500 per month in most places, on a VERY tight budget. Definately more here! (SF bay area)

It not only depends on where you live, but HOW you live. You need to learn the difference between what is NEEDED and what is WANTED. An example is clothes are NEEDED, designer labels are WANTED. Heat and electricity are NEEDED, satellite TV, IPODS, the latest video games, etc are WANTED.
Keep in mind that NOT HAVING all the luxuries has never hurt or caused serious damage to any child.

Also, I have to add - you get more than I do WORKING, so as long as you don't live beyond your means, you hsould be okay.

Bchlvr
At least $3000 or more, I would think.

Depends on where they live, what the cost of living is, what reasonable housing costs in that area, etc.

In my area I think a family of 4 needs a minimum of $2400/month to survive (depending on housing costs, a mortgage vs. low income apartment makes a big difference. Im estimating using an average apartment or low mortgage)

Depends on where they live. A family of four in San Diego needs to earn a lot more than a family of four in Longmont CO, and the Colorado family needs to earn more than a family living in a very rural area of Arkansas. It also depends on if they are living as an agriculture family that makes their own food. They would need less money because they are making their own food instead of spending hundreds a month on groceries.

it seems like the more money you make, the more you spend...so you're never ahead!

well it's just me and i need around $3000 so I'm guessing between $5000-$6500 to survive...but it depends on the ages and where they live. (i live in miami, that's why my estimate is high)

Well depends well on your location; in China you could say $100 guarantees basic living and survival, including all expenses. In London, you cant survive without makin at least $2000 a month, coz survival there means style, party and being posh...

You should be at least making $5000 a month no matter where you live. I have 3 and make barely 3000 and i am struggling
