HSBC are good for banking and have good internet banking.
Telephone banking can sometimes be frustrating as there are language issues with some of their call centres. However its pot luck as some are still UK based e.g. hemel, leeds, edinburgh & hamilton.
As with all high-street banks they have their pros and cons but all of the big 4 are much of a muchness.
Halifax I found had awful customer services so I closed all my accounts.
HSBC also has a sister bank ... First Direct which is telephone banking only (no branches...but you can pay cheques into hsbc still). They currently offer you £50 if you switch your bank to them. |

I have never had a problem with them. no trouble getting a loan or having a bank overdraft from time to time from them. As with all banks there are good and bad points with each one. Its down to your own experiences with different banks that help you decide personaly on your choice of which bank to use. |

they lost £800 of mine on a money transfer once. i switched banks. money was re-imbursed. always wonder who thought they'd won the bank jackpot before it had to be returned... |

I am moving my account away from HSBC because they are expensive and inflexible. |

They are ace! If you don't like the foreign call centres though, try first direct. Part of HSBC, even better service, a human being in the UK answering your call 24hrs a day, 365 days a year. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Products like on-demand banking on your mobile, internet banking etc etc. Fab. But I would say that, I work there......... |

Depends which country you live in. In North America, HSBC sucks in terms of products and customer services. In Asia, HSBC is the best in both, hands down. |

To me they appear to be the bank for rich. That appears to be the niche market they target. For an ordinary bloke they may appear to be snooty, too rigid and not prople oriented. But they do have some great service ideas in case you can withstand the call centre people speaking in a totally foreign language couched as English. |

Crappest bank on the high street. Evidence? They love students, ergo they love making money out of you whilst offering you shiny things in the hope you never realise how much you're being ripped off! |

Haven't they just started closing accounts and branches that aren't profitable enough?
As Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation, are they really your best 'local' option?
Personally, I'd look elsewhere, and that elsewhere would certainly not be Royal Bank of Scotland group (inc. Nat-west) as they are biggest rip off merchants in the sector.
LloydsTSB pay interest on your deposits from day one (but don't allow you to get at your money till about day seven) and only charge you £35 every time you go 1p overdrawn!
Smaller is better, building society is best! But hey don't listen to me, do what everyone does and learn the hard way! |

Alright but there Internet banking can be a little doggy!
Natwest are quite generous with their overdraft (though not always a good thing!) |
