What does the typical American household spend each month on car payments?
Specifically, it'd be helpful to know what % of households do not have any car payment, and for those that do, the average vs. median amount per month.

Oprahs debt diet thing says that car payments should be no more than 15% of your take home income after paying for insurance and fuel. We just got 2 cars and our monthly payment (which cover both vehicles) is about $550.00. Maybe that's why I am broke all the time :)

Well, I paid my first car off, then I decided to get a new one. My payment is only $274/mo. which I don't feel to bad now that I look at what some other people are paying....rediculous!

dutch_luvs69
The average car payment per car in the USA in 2005 was $548.00 a month .

This info comes from the National Association of Car Dealers. New car loans average 378$ month for six 6 years. Note to any one you know going to by a NEW car.
Drive the car off the lot - you are upside down on the loan and insurance. You owe more than the loans is worth and more than the car will bring when Totaled.
Four years in to the average loan - The car is worth 30% of cost and you owe 50% of loan. These are real facts dealers loan people don't want you to know.
visit www.daveramsey.com learn why real millionaires don't drive NEW cars. If your cars costs exceed 40% of your yearly income you got to much money in losing liabilities

I would only spend $200.00 on a car payment. Have all the money in the world? Name your figure! Only you can make the car payment decision. I have no car payment.

huh ???

a car should be thought of as only a tool to get to and from work...not a status symbol like it is here in los angeles
