What happens if i close my checking account?
I am currently in the transition of closing down my checking account with one bank and opening it with another. i went through all the automatic withdrawls, but if i missed something what would happen if it were closed?

If your paycheck still went to your old bank and the account was closed they would notify you company and re-issue you the check. I did that, the only thing was it took about 3-4 days to actually get my pay.

You should make sure your new account is opened first. Keep both accounts open for about a month or two. When you are sure that there are no checks outstanding or any other deposits/charges to your old checking account, THEN close it.

It would be sent back to the person you paid as "account closed" . the person you paid would probally try to contact you.

Make sure that you speak with a personal banker and don't assume so you don't make any mistakes. He can check your accounts on their PCs to ensure that you did everything you had to do before going to another bank.

Strawberry Shortcake
the companies will try to contact you by mail or telephone... better notify them first before closing the old account.

They will send a paper bill to your home address.

It will be reported as a bad check by the first company. Normally the validity of the check is 6 months from the time you wrote the check, i.e the depositer can deposit it anytime within the 6 months. You might want to keep the old account open for 6 months if you do not remember your check writing history.

The withdrawal will not be paid and the merchant attempting the draft will be notified. Often times the merchant will treat it in a similar fashion as a bounced check and contact you to make payment as well a fee for the returned item.

Double Dachshunds Owner
It would be denied unless you have a rollover plan with another account (like a savings account) at that bank. Best to alert all your auto-withdrawal merchants of the changeover as soon as you open the new account.

Also overlapping the two accounts for a month is a good idea just in case. Do this and leave the initial account dormant. This way your next statement on the initial account will show whether or not you have forgotten something. It will show activity or no activity.

Good Luck to you.

rockyfella25
if you missed something, call those people and give them new account..you will be considered check fraudulent.

Diamond
an account can take a hit up to 6 months after its closed and all fees and penalties still apply
