What happens if i write out a personal check--but there are not enough funds in the bank?
...will the person still get the money (but leave my account negative)?

or will he NOT get the money?

also, what is the difference between an NSF fee (non-suffecient funds) and an over-draft? thanks...

If it's $100 or less, you'll probably just get a broken thumb. $100-$1,000 will result in a broken arm. $1,000-$10,000, and you can kiss your knees goodbye. Anything over that, and you'll never use Y/A again.

NSF-That is when the bank returns your check unpaid due to insufficient funds.

OD-This is when the bank pays the item that caused your account to overdraw.

As far as if the person will get the money or not, it all depends on if your bank decides to pay the item or not.

They usually base this decision on the amount of the check, how much it would overdraw your account and your relationship with the bank.

The payee will get the money only if you have "overdraft protection" (which is no by default). In this case, payee will not know whether money came from your account or overdraft but your bank will likely charge a fee (~$40) for this service and will leave your account balance negative.

If you don't have overdraft protection, the payee will not receive money. You bank will charge you a fee (~$40) for writing check without sufficient funds. The payee will charge you another fee (~$50) for returned check in additional to the original amount.

It depends on bank policy, and this does vary from bank to bank and from client to client. If the check is honored without sufficient funds in your account, you account will be treated as over-drawn and you will be charged $30.00 to $50.00 for the overdraft and anywhere from $6.00 to $12.00 per day until you have a positive balance in your account.

This is why bank charges account for approximately 25 to 30 % of banks profits om an annual basis.

Assuing your bank declines the check and returns it to the recipient, the party to whom you issued the check will be charged $25.00 to $60.00 for the returned check and they will hate you forever.

It is nice to be a bank!!!

The check will bounce, and the person will not get the money and you will also be charged an overdraft/NSF fee.

It really depends on your bank you should talk to somebody or look on your bank's website for more information.

It would bounce. Person will not get the money and you will be charged overdrawn fees.

Plus, it's illegal to write 'bad' checks.

kratospiche
No they will not,but some banks will give the money if its not there and make your account in the negative and then charge you every day till you get it back in the positive.and over draft means you write out a check for what ever and there is not the correct funds.good luck

In some states you can be arrested and convicted for passing bad checks. It is up to the bank and your arrangements with them whether the check is paid as an overdraft or returned for insufficient funds. If you have arranged for some kind of over draft protection and have not exceeded the limits of that, the bank will pay the check and obtain the money for it from and automatic loan, credit card advance, or savings account withdrawal. If you are a good customer (in their minds) and the amount is relatively small or meets some other arbitrary criteria the bank may pay it and charge you an overdraft fee. The criteria is really completely their choice and doesn't need to be consistent so long as it can't be shown to be illegally discriminating. If your mom or dad had a big enough account with the bank they might even pay the check and not charge a fee

Don't do it....The check will bounce unless you have overdraft protection. You will get NSF penalties.

Debbie
It will depend on what your bank offers. Mine will cover an overdraft but charge me a fee. If your bank won't cover it then you could be looking at a warrant since it is illegal to write a bad check. Then you will have to pay a fee for the bounced check to the bank, the person you wrote it to and the prosecuting attorney if the law gets involved. It's best to never knowingly write a check unless the money is in the bank.

NSF and Overdraft are the same thing - the account was overdrawn. Banks will charge you an NSF fee for doing that, sometimes they will cover the check but charge you that fee, other times they will charge you the fee and the check is returned unpaid ( The person who gets the check is also charged a fee for depositing it , if it is returned )

Whether or not the bank decides to cover your check if it is overdrawn, depends on a few things:

1 - How long the account has been open
2 - Whether or not you have overdrawn it in the past
3 - How much overdrawn it is

If your account was opened for at least a year and the amount overdrawn was less than $100 the odds are they will cover it and charge you the fee. But you'll have to put funds back in the account soon or they will close the account on you for being overdrawn.

So if you have $100 in the account, but your check was $150. They might cover it , making your new balance -85 ( figure about a $20-35 overdraft fee depending on bank )

the person will get his money but you will be chrage for what you went over and plus the overdraft fee..

It depends on your bank.
Sometimes they will honor the check, but also charge you a fee on top of however much the check put your acount inthe hole. This is an overdraft.
Other times, they will not honor the check but will still charge you the fee. This is NSF (non-sufficient funds).
Some banks also charge an extended overdraft fee. This is when they charge your account a set amount each day that it remains overdrawn, putting you further in debt.
If you allow the account to remain overdrawn too long, they will close your account and attempt to collect the amount owed. If you don't pay, they can take legal action.
If the person or place you are writing the check to does not get their money, they also have theoption of taking legal action against you which can range from suing you or the amount owed, to having your wages garnished, to having you incarcerated.
