What happens when you lose your job and you have credit cards to pay and no way to make your payments?

What happens is that your debt goes to the roof if you don't get another job soon!

Never, ever ignore the statement...Be proactive and contact the bank or credit card company, and explain your situation. Be honest and discuss carrying the balance, as well as your expectation in getting a new job, unemployment, etc. Expect them to turn off the card to further charging if you have credit troubles, but if you want to save your credit history, it is important you do this. Being a little humble will show them that "their" credit card is a top priority and that you want to make good. It will go a long way.

The Weasel
Time to take responsibility. You'd be best to cancel the cards and take whatever job you can get to at least pay the minimums. At least until you find a better job.

Don't file bankruptcy like that dude says up above. That is a very last resort. Creditors may not haunt you but your credit report will be shot to hell for the next 7 years if not more. Forget about buying a house or car or whatever.

Stop using credit cards. If you don't have the cash you don't' need it.

By all means, call the credit card companies and tell them the problem. Most will try to work something out with you until you get another job. DON'T JUST IGNORE IT! As long as they hear from you, they know you are trying to work it out. If you don't communicate with them, they assume you are trying to get out of paying your debt.

wadacious
First contact the credit card companies and explain your situation. They will be more than willing to work with you. There are several agencies that offer help to get you through the rough times. You can start with this one. www.debtconsolidationcare.com
I hope everything works out well for you.

Get another job. Quick. Sell things you don't need. Move into a smaller place. Ask your folks for help.

sporregar
You go into arrears and then they take you to collections.

Call your credit card companies. Let them know your situation. It is best to contact them before they contact you. They are a lot more likely to work with you that way.

Most companies are willing to reduce their payments or cut finance charges for a short period of time.

let all the creditors know what happened and see if they can work with you. If you have kids in school- apply for free lunches. Go to your church and ask if they can use the benevolent fund for your bills. Start networking with friends to find another job. Next time- have a networking job on the side so that you are not up against the wall, and work both jobs. Cut the credit cards up- leaving one for emergencies. Eat PB&J and mac and cheese for awhile.
If you have a real estate license- let me know- I have information for you.

websterjdjr
Dont pay them.yer credit will be screwed but you dont have a job so they cant sue ya. they aint no more debtors prisons.so they cant send you away. Just dont pay em.they probably screwing you with terrible interest anyway.they charge off them cards and they go away after 7 years from your record.need visa card? get visa western union card debit. works just like a visa but YOU load it by prepay at any western union!
one other thang DONT FILE FOR BANKRUPTSY! court orders and court records dont get removed, dont go away from your credit report... while credit cards thats charged off ,do.

what usually happens is that you don't pay your bills and start to get nervous - if you have a large amount of debt then just file bankruptcy - it's easy and no one haunts you for money
