What have you found as the most effective way to save for a downpayment on a house?

what worked for us was, taking a certain % out of our bi-weekly salary and have it automatically deposited into a seperate savings account, out of sight, out of mind we never saw it so we weren't tempted to use it.

Put aside 15% of your gross pay directly out of your checking account. If it's automatic you dont have to think about it.

Make yourself a budget and see how much you can save, first of all. Then make sure you stick to it! Also, put away any other money (tax refund) to save as well and don't spend it!

There are a lot of programs out there that can help you in buying a house with little or no money down as well. Even some builders will "gift" you the down payment. Check out all your options!

Ive heard depending on when you start saving you should take at least (monthly) $350 before you figure out bills and everything. You take it off the top like it was never there. Do that for about 1 to 2 yrs. 3 or 4 yrs down the line you should have a nice lump to do what you wish.

Just save money from each check and dont touch it. Yea i would like to know other ways myself lol

Save half of your income (This is not as easy as it seems. Drop me a line if you need more details)

Get on a budget to find out where all your money is going so you can work at cutting in some areas to save money. Open an hsbcdirect.com saving account they are giving 4.8 percent INTEREST. You wont find that anywhere! Put all your saving in their to earn interest while you save to meet your goal.

First : convince yourself that you want to 'SAVE' - no matter how difficult it might be.

Second : Get a paper and pen. Make a budget to see what are your incomes and where is all the money going.

Third : Mark out all the items where you can cut down or items which you can eliminate altogether. Decide on a fixed minimum amount which you will save in any situation (put something aside for emergencies)

Fourth : Open a special account and deposit the amount decided as soon as you get your cheque. This is a 'touch me not' account. Once the money is in, its gone - just forget it.

Fifth : Revise your savings amount every six months. Check on Account Balance and see if you are reaching your target.

Do this for a year and then you can tell others - how to save for a down payment !
