The simplest way I know how to do math like this is to break it down into 10% increments. This works nicely for figuring out tips as well as sale prices.
$13 x 10% = $1.30
$1.30 x 6 = $7.80
Further broken down for speed:
$1.00 x 6 = $6.00
$0.30 x 6 = $1.80
add
6 + 1.8 = 7.80

5.20 is what it is discounted, the way I figure it out is by taking a tenth of 13.00 which is 1.30 and then I take that number and multiply if by 4 (because there are 4-1/10 in 40%) and from that I get 5.20....not for sure what the exact mathematical equation is, but that is how I get my answer.
and then the final price would be 13.00-5.20=7.80. |

Convert 40% to a decimal. You do this by moving the decimal two spots to the left (0.40). "Of" in a word problem always means multiply so you have $13 * 0.40. This would give you the amount off the price so you would subtract that from the original 13 to get the final price. (Or you could multiply by .6 instead of the .4 and not have to worry about the subtraction part). |

any time you see a % sign think of this:
percent means per (like in miles PER hour) its how many PER.
Cent meants 100 (its latin) so 40% means there are 40 in 100
so 0.40 (like 40 cents in a dollar)
so take that 40% and multiply it by your cost.
0.40 x $13.00
and you get how much you save
which is $5.20
so the final result is $13.00 - $5.20
=$7.80 |

two thumbs down? can people not do math. She wanted to know who much should would PAY not how much she's saving! duh. any cell phone or calulator can give her this . Take the price mulitply it by the percent hit the percent button and that is the FINAL price. The amount you pay.
