What is a fair amount of rent to pay my mum?
She is a single parent with two other children besides me. I am 20 and working full time, i earn £780 a month. How much is a fair amount to pay her? I think i am also eligable for council tax. i currently pay £325 a month.

Ollie
I think what you pay depending on your mams financial situation is fair.

kumala
sounds good to me.it also teaches you the value of things.
i admire you for being responsible, and not taking things for granted- your mum should be proud of you

I always payed my mum 25% of my take home pay

325 sounds pretty fair, why are you eligible for council tax ? Its paid on the property not by how many people live there.

aires69uk OFFICIAL
I'm tempted to say whatever your mum ask for. But I think £375 is fair enough.

cunny
I think that anything up to half your net income is fair if it includes food , heat, light, washing etc etc. - so £325 is about right. It would cost you that in digs without all the extras.

sturge88@btinternet.com
It all depends how much your mother does for you, ie; cooking, washing etc.
£325.00 seems reasonable, it depends on what you get for your money. What does your mother say about you making a contribution towards her Council Tax bill?

£325 is more than enough, if you suddenly leave home to get
to move in with a mate, she is really gonna miss that money.

If some of your food is included too in her shopping then I think it is reasonable. If not I would have thought that £300 may be more like it.............

goganno
thats well over the odds your being a bit generous thats half ur wages nearly u might as well go part time and give r a 10er

A little steep £300 sounds fair, depends if you help around the house

Thats a fair amount, and very generous of you. Carry on paying your way in life as nothing is for free. Be independent -no-one will be able to dictate to you.

If you only have a room in her house, and buying your own food then 325 is enough,I have a friend who has a room mate and they buy food separetley, and split the rent they each pay 250 a month,I think what you are paying is suffiencent

Alice C
thats enough

Answer Doug
Depends a lot on what the rent / mortgage is for her, what she makes, and how much work you do vs how much work she does taking care of the house and the other kids. It sounds like you are the "man of the house"; if you were her domestic partner, you'd pay half of the house costs (at least) so why not pay that in this case?

jen t
i would of said that is to much...my son pays me £200 & i`m in the same boat as your mum

£81.25,for rent,food,laundry,electric-- sounds a great deal to me.I doubt you will get a better deal.
And well done you,I know of some people who think they don't need to contribute to the household, and still expect to be waited on hand and foot. The sad thing is their parents let them !!Those people are in for a big shock when they enter the real world !!

If its a council house you will also have to pay rent? My nieces earned a bit less than you and paid £200pm each, if I was your mum I would take a lot less, about £40 per week - you are paying nearly £80 per week do you use up that amount in heating, food, hot water, phone bill etc>

£325 sounds reasonable, my children used to pay 30% of their income when they lived at home.

?
Hi,
Our daughter pays £120 per month room & board.

I think you are paying quite a lot in preportion to what you earn but if you're happy with that then that's fine.

When kids start working and paying rent, you charge appropriatly, you wouldn't (or I wouldn't) charge in relation to the current rental market, that's what living at home is about.

If you are renting a room at home, you do not need to pay council tax yourself, however I'm not 100% sure if your mum would lose any council tax rebate she may receive.

If you were paying a lower rent, maybe you could help with the odd bill etc when she's struggling.

Hope that helps

Danny

A fair way to figure out how much you should pay your mum is add up all the expenses of the house. Then, you should divide it by the number of people living in the house. That will give you a close estimate of how much each of you use and pay your mum that.

Gaz
I would say that what your paying at the moment is quite generous. I think £250 would be more than enough.
