Q dog | What is a good way to stay organized with spending? I use my debit card a lot and end up with too many receipt |
I don't want to use all credit card, since I'll spend more. Do I need to balance my checkbook all of the time with these 100's of receipts? I could just spend cash... Let me know what you think... |

I've tried everything. Credit cards are a no-no. Too easy to spend spend spend and get out of control. So I have 1 credit card which I use ONLY on holidays.
I now do everything in cash and carry very little cash around with me. If I carry a load, I end up spending a load too.
I have a book listed with food, transport, clothes, stationery etc. Every evening without fail I enter all the receipts in under the right listing. Over a period of 6 months, you understand clearly where your money is going and can work out if it is a waste or necessary and cut down accordingly. I take out money from the bank, when I need it. You'll be surprised how money-savvy you become when you start writing down daily what you have spent. Try it. Good luck |

I used Quicken to keep track of my spending.
debit card is better than credit because you;re ony spending what you have. |

A debit card is the way to go. You don't have to save every receipt. Just log on to your bank's website and register for your online account. It doesn't cost anything, it's very quick, and you can check your account anytime. It even shows you your latest transactions and details. Cash is too much hassle these days. At least with a debit card, you'll know exactly how much you have at all times. You constantly have to recount cash to be sure. |

Use Quicken. I track all of my finances (Checking, savings, investments, mortgage, and more). It remembers the names of stroes you spend money at so you can quickly type in what you've spent. The basic version is only $30.
Yes, balance your checkbook. It's important to know what your financial situation is. |

Cash is easiest, but you do have to have a plan for how to use it.
List out everything you want to spend money on next month (food, clothes, rent, restarurant meals, etc.)
And you're smart for not wanting to use the credit cards.
That's how middle class people end up broke middle class people. |

If you want to reign in your spending, one of the best ways to start is by going from using your debit card a lot (and incurring fees!) to withdrawing your wage on pay day and paying cash for everything.
That way, you have a concrete amount of money in your wallet. A certain amount has to go on rent (most mortgage payments are direct debit from the account anyway) food, and bills. That way you can see at a glance what you have left, and what you can afford to spend. There is no mucking around with receipts.
I would just spend cash. If you find it really hard to manage cash, consider putting it in envelopes for each day and handling it that way, or making all the major payments (rent, bills, and groceries) all on pay day.
In many instances you can get a discount on items if you offer cash, particularly big ticket items like whitegoods or services around the house like roof repairs or carpet cleaning. Being used to handling cash is a good thing, and tradies and sales assistants prefer cash anyway.
Do a written budget including all your regular expenses (set aside a particular amount each pay day for bills that might not yet have arrived, also). Then withdraw the money as cash, and spend it according to the budget. Carry the budget in your wallet or keep it on your fridge to keep you motivated. Eventually your spending will fall into line.
Best wishes |

I end up spending more with a debit card than I do when I use cash. I put cash aside for this and that, and seem able to budget better. When the money you have allocated for things is gone, there is no more cash in your wallet for them.
With the debit card you do not see the money coming out of your wallet as much, depending on how you use it, somehow it seems closer to credit that way.
So yes, you answered your own question, it is better to use cash if you wish to save or not overrun your budget.

I was having this same problem. I'd spend HOURS entering my receipts into Quicken and I got tired of it. Nowadays, I simply keep my receipts and check out the online banking my bank offers. Once a receipt has cleared (and I don't need it to return something), I shred it. Quick and easy.

I like to spend cash on small things and bank card larger items. If you don't keep the receipts, you can always go to the bank statements. |
