What is an overdraft?
My available balance is $400 more than my account balance. What does this mean?

Ethan
An overdraft occurs when withdrawals from a bank account exceed the available balance; i.e. over-drawings. This gives the account a negative balance and in effect means the account provider is offering credit.

If there is a prior agreement with the account provider for an overdraft facility, and the amount overdrawn is within this authorised overdraft, then interest is normally charged at the agreed rate. If the balance exceeds the agreed facility then fees may be charged and higher interest rate might apply.

crazybaby82
that is an overdraft protection thing.....it will cover you up to 400 dollars when you don't have any money......but when you use that then u have to repay it.....it will come right out of your deposits you make......my suggestions is not to use it unless it is absolutely necessary

it means you've spent money you don't have.

Overdraft means your account is overdrawn (you've spent more than you have in your account). Your Available balance is the amount of money you have in your account after your purchases have cleared. Usually that's less than the account balance because the account's balance may not reflect recent debit purchases.

prizelady88
the bank is allow you to draw more than your balance. It is a small fee its good for emergency but be carefully with it. Find out what they charge for overdraft it might not be worth it

The $400 is a loan that the bank will give you (sometimes with huge charges) in order to pay a balance if you bounce a check. Instead of bouncing, the bank will pay it, and automatically give you the loan.

Monies taken out of an account above the amount of deposit. You may have credited your account before the actual balance was accrued.

P*Kitty
somehow you wrote a check for more than you had in your account

O Jam
You are aloud to take out more money than you have based on the fact that you have to pay this amount back.

kaykiko
This means that your overdraft is $400.

An overdraft is like a loan, you have been given that money by the bank to use as you wish but you will eventually have to pay it back. I don't like overdrafts as I've always find I just spend what I have so for me, they don't work as a safety-net. However, if you are better with money than I am, then you may find the extra cash useful.

This means that your account has a $400 overdraft privilege. This is a feature that gives you $400 extra to use when your account balance goes below $0. Of course the bank is going to charge a fee(usually $25 or $30) for every overdraft transaction. The overdraft privilege is designed to save you the embarrassment of bouncing checks all over town when you get in a little financial trouble.

An overdraft means you are in debt

A mistake, or some of the checks you have written have cleared
