Where do you live? Do you want just a checking account? In California, Southeast, and Atlantic coast, my favorite is Wachovia Bank. It is the largest bank with free checking with no direct deposit or minimum balance requirements. The three bigger banks (Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase, and Wells Fargo) all offer free checking only with direct deposit or a minimum balance requirement, otherwise there is a monthly fee. Many regional banks and small banks are also good, and many offer free checking like Wachovia.

Whatever you do, realize that nowadays you shouldn't have to pay a monthly service fee. If the bank doesn't offer you a free account, go to another bank.

Instead of using ATMs and drive throughs, for the first few months go inside and do your transactions with the tellers and get to know the bank personel. Regardless of whether it is a big bank or small bank, if you do this you'll soon get a bank with attentive service.
