Nyx | What is pre-retirement income? |
I've been reading a lot of literature about preparing to retire, anyway many of the books and online articles, say to retire well you need to save 70-85% of pre-retirement income? Can someone explain it in basic terms?
Also isn't that such an excessive amount? Do people really need to save that much? I honestly don't spend 70% on myself right now. So I just don't understand why financial advisors say that. |

Pre retirement income is income you make from personal services before you retire....a long way of saying a salary or what you get from the work you do.
If you make $100,000.00 per year income then your retirement plans (Pension 401K and Social Security) should generate 70-80% of that number......or $70,000-$85,000 per year ...the theory being that after your retire your expenses are less.
So if you save one million dollars and put it at interest it will earn about $40,000 per year so you do the math. |

If you get in the habit now of spending less than 80% of what you make, you should be fine--the savings will add up over your 40 years of working, will grow and then when you retire, you will be used to living on your standard of living and the money will go farther.
Eg, make $100,000, save $20,000. That means you are living on 80% anyway. After 40 years, you could have $2M saved up. 4% of that is $40,000 to $80,000 a year. At $80,000 a year, you are spending the same as when you had a job. |
