if u settle for just any job then minimum wage but if u apply for a real job and dont sale yourself short, walk in your interview and act like u own the place, like u would do them a favor by working there, not that u need them then u will make more |

Unless you are a high school graduate or hold a GED, most states will not let a 16 year old work full time as there are child labor laws in effect designed to keep you in SCHOOL, where you really, really need to be unless you want to limit your future to low income career options.
Average is going to vary considerably depending on the labor pool in your area. Lots of workers in the available labor pool usually means lower wages. I'm guessing the vast majority of teens start out under $6 an hour.
In expensive areas, those wages can be much higher. I had one daughter start at $7 in a coffee shop in San Jose, CA (2 years ago), and another start here in Austin, TX (typically a much lower paying job market..she got very lucky) at $8 plus tips in a Chinese restaurant. Admittedly, the second daughter's income is way above average in this area for that type of work.
Also what you do makes a big difference. In areas where unions are strong, those jobs typically pay pretty well, even at the entry level. Fast food always pays poorly. Retail varies considerably. High demand spots like Abercrombie or Hollister pay minimum wage; grocery and hardware stores usually quite a bit higher.
Costco and Whole Foods pay well for retail, as does Home Depot. I'm not sure if they require you be 18. Again, fewer opportunities exist under 18 because the labor laws limit your hours and which jobs you can do.
Good luck. |

How much is minimum wage is what you should be asking.
5.15 in some states.
8.00 in some cities.
People don't pay 16 year old very much because they really don't know very much and they have another full time job to do. GO TO SCHOOL. |

Almost next to nothing...... dont do it! :)
Work hard at school and wait until youre at least 18. Wages at 18/19 goes up heaps..... Or work really hard at uni and do free work experience. The job I'm in now (analyst) compared to 2 years ago (supermarket) pays 4 times the amount per hour...... |
