What is the best bank in the US to use during these hard times?
I live in Georgia. I've been banking with Wachovia for about 5 years now. Wachovia recently merged with Wells Fargo. When I first started banking there, it was a SouthTrust. Wachovia bought them out, and now they've merged with another company. I've have a few problems with my bank throughout the last few years. It gets aggravating when the companies switch, policies change, and other miscellaneous problems I sometimes encounter. I know Wachovia is FDIC insured, but I'm not sure if this bank is right for me anymore.

After putting thought into this situation, I have decided that I would like to change banks. Does anyone have a suggestion on a bank to use that has good customer service and is doing financial well during these hard times? If you have a particular good experience with a certain bank, please share. Thanks =]

P.S. I use banking for checking accounts and savings accounts only.
Additional Details
I am very much aware of what FDIC is and how it works. That was not my question.

Most people like credit unions better than banks so I would go with a credit union in your area the only problem with that is if you travel most credit unions are only found locally.
Some banks not to go with are Wells Fargo and Bank of America unless you have a ton of money with them they treat you like ****. I used to work there so I have first hand experience witnessing how they treat the average person.

Any FDIC insured bank is fine. Your money will be secure.

They're all pretty much the same. You should keep your money in several banks and credit unions. Mix it up. Rich people have several bank accounts, including overseas accounts. There is no limit on how many bank accounts and debit cards you can have.

All the banks care about is that you don't use it for fraud and terrorism and that's it. I've had like three bank accounts at one time. I also have Wachovia, the merger with Wells Fargo doesn't weird me out. Its fine for now. I used to have a Bank of America account, I could do a lot of things over their phone customer service and their reps were good and very nice.

Another reason why its good to keep your money in several banks and credit unions, is in a case of identity theft. If that ever happens to you, the thief will not get all of your money.

EVERY US bank is FDIC insured. Failure to maintain FDIC insurance gets their license to BE a bank pulled faster than you can ask the question. Banks merging has been NORMAL for DECADES. If you don't LIKE, the bank, look for one you like. Aside form that, you have NOTHING to worry about unless the US TREASURY fails. In that event, the US dollar will be worthless no matter WHERE it is.

i do da same thing i use Bank Of America they realy help u alot even when ur not doin so good and for every bit u spend they double it and put it n ur saveings!

they merged with south trust because they had a better customer service name than wachovia did. i'm not sure why the second merger, but i don't like wachovia at all. i use to work there it sucked. i would try to see if you can get an account with a federal credit union which i've found to be the most helpful.

Credit unions are always better for people.

Unless you have a considerable amount of money in your accounts, then your money is safe. Remember that most banks are insured by the FDIC for deposits up to $250,000 (used to be $100,000), so if something does happen to your financial institution you are guaranteed your money up to $250,000.

However if you do have a considerable amount of money, I might suggest a local or smaller bank that is insured by the FDIC. Interest rates are probably higher than today's banking giants, also many smaller banks have much higher rates on CD's which in today's economy might seem quite enticing. On the other hand, BB&T and Bank of America, and even Wells Fargo are good solid banks. Those 3 banks don't make risky and stupid investments like Wachovia did, hence they are still around.

IMHO, as far as personal banking goes, the most secure bank today is Wells Fargo... but if you want better service you might want to look at smaller, more localized banks.... Although, with the current situation in the banking industry, there are some risks with using a small bank wether or not they are federally insured. There are give and takes either way, but I would prefer the security of a powerhouse like WFC.

As far as FDIC is concerned, pretty much all well known banks are insured but it doesn't hurt to verify. However, it is worthy to note that the FDIC doesn't insure all accounts held at an insured bank. Checking, savings, IRA, NOW, CD accounts are federally insured but there are several other types of accounts that are not. You should always make sure your particular account type is covered.

If all you are using is checkings and savings, there aren't going to be any earth-shattering differences between any banks. Wachovia is doing fine as far as I know, and switching would probably be more hassle than it's worth.

There is this fantastic bank in Nigeria. They email me all the time. You just give them all your bank details. They even give you cash for free!

I can't believe it actually exists. I'm still waiting for my cash, but I was promised by the President of the bank that it is coming.

Amazing isn't it?!!
