Generally, an FDIC insured online savings account will give you one of the highest APYs with some liquidity.

HSBC Online Savings Account gives 5.05% APY.
ING Direct gives 4.50% APY.

If you plan on not touching the money for months or years, you can invest the money in a CD. Bankrate.com has a good listing of banks' CD rates.

depends on the type of investment you want. you could open an isa and put 3k into it per tax year or open a fix rate bond, make an appointment with a financial adviser in your branch and they will be able to discuss it but dont let them make u open an account you dont want, they do it for "points" which helps them get a bonus every quarter (ooops did i say that out loud) or use moneysupermarket.com its quite good. depends on the amount u have and why u want to save it, what type of access u want to it etc.

Any major bank backed by the FDIC is fine. The real question is not where, but HOW. Do you want a checking account, a savings account, a CD, a mutual fund, a savings bond, etc? Depending on your goals, these could all be good ways to store your money.

Get down to your local library tonight and start checking out personal finance books - they can be wonderfully empowering and inspiring, and most are written in simple, easy-to-understand terms.

-The Complete Idiot's Guide to Managing Your Money
-“Smart Women Finish Rich” or “The Automatic Millionaire”, by David Bach
