I agree with most people here! Do not get a credit card if you do not have to. The average college student graduates with $8,000 in credit card debt. If you absolutely must get a credit card check bankrate.com, they have a place where you can compare many cards at one time. Make sure you get one with no annual fee and beware of teaser (ex. 0% for one year) rates and do not charge more than you can pay off each month. |

I'd really recommend that you not carry a balance if you can help it. In that case, you'll want a good rewards card that will pay you for funneling your normal spending through the card. A couple good cards include the Citi mtvU card and the Capital One No Hassle Miles for Students Visa.
You can use this rewards calculator to see which student rewards card will pay you the most for your normal spending:

You need to have at least a job to get a credit card because on the credit card application they will ask where you work and what your income is. If you say "looking for work", they will trash your credit card application. Also you may not have any credit history since you're neither a citizen, nor a green card holder. No credit history also goes against the credit card applicant.
The easiest way to get a credit card is to open an account with credit union and apply for that credit union's mastercard or visa credit card. Generally if you're a student in a school or university, thats all you need to open an account at credit union -- nothing more required. There's always going to be a credit union which accepts your school as qualification for membership.
They have much better chance of approving credit card even if you have low income. I told my credit union, that i work for $8.50 an hour only and they provided me a visa credit card with $1000 credit line -- it worked good for student.
Then you can build your credit history from there. |

My gut says none, but if you pay it on time and don't keep a huge balance on it it will actually improve your credit score and this is a pretty important thing later in life. Change your address if you move so your statements come to you, and don't forget to pay it! If you are unorganized or constantly broke then STAY AWAY! |
