What is the most effective way to pay off a credit card?
I have been paying on this credit card for 8 years and the balance is still really high. My interest rate is sky high. It seems I will never pay it off.

If you have been faithful in submitting payments on time, then you have every right to request a decrease in interest. Companies are usually pretty good about pleasing their good customers.

Balance transfers are also effective. If you have a card with a lower apr, transfer the balance over... although sometimes there are fees associated with the transfer, you'll be a winner in the long run.

Mr. Prefect
Move it to another credit card where the interest rate is lower.

Caryn
Ok start by finding another card with 0% interest even if it is only for a year you can keep doing this process. Do a balance transfer to the card with 0% interest and ALWAYS pay more than the minimum payment! This is key! Everytime the card with 0% interest is going to run out switch again. Even if you can't get 0% try to find something less than yours. Hopefully yours is not one of those at 28% that is why you can't pay it off....GOOD LUCK!

You may even want to look into a personal loan just to pay it off, put your home or car up as collateral. Loan interest rates are much lower than credit cards!

Get a second job, make a budget, make it your #1 priority, and get it paid off.

Also check out www.daveramsey.com or listen to him on the radio.

See if you can get your interest rate reduced. Just call up your credit card company and ask them. Tell them you're considering filing for bankruptcy - but would prefer to work out some kind of payment plan. Explain your 8 yr debt will never get paid off at this rate.

They rather get something than have the account defaulted.

If you have any extra money (income tax return, overtime pay) put that towards it. Or maybe you could call them and see if you could re-negotiate the interest rate. Sometimes you may get an offer in the mail to transfer your balance to another credit card company.

Oh, and try not to use the card anymore.

Make it a priority - pay that bill first and pay more than the minimum, as much as you can afford.

Contact the bank where your checking account is and ask if they would consider giving you a personal loan for this. You can take a loan out at a much lower rate, use that money to pay off the card, and then pay the loan on a schedule.

If the bank says no, which they may because of your credit, the next step is to call the card company and tell them you know you can transfer this balance to another company at a lower rate and would like to see they'd just consider giving you a lower rate to help you pay it off easier. that almost always works.

April R
If you have been responsibly paying then you may want to call your credit company about lowering the interest rate on your card. Another thing you may want to consider is balance transferring your existing debt to a credit card with 0% apr for the life of the balance or just a much lower interest rate. Make sure that its for the life of the balance and not 8 to 12 months because you know that you probably will not pay off the debt by then and what happens is the interest rate jumps up. Thirdly, make sure that you are no longer charging on the card, pay everything in cash. Another thing if you have the time try to get a part- time job and put all the money towards your debt.

fireguy
transfer it to a 0 intrest card then it will be easier to pay off.. or take out a low intrest loan to pay it off

Wow! go to www.daveramsey.com
You have to make it your #1 job to get rid of it. Just paying the minimum it will take forever as you know. Get focused. Make a budget.

it takes forever to pay off a card when you pay the minimum payment. Pay more than the minimum, and instruct the company you want the extra money to pay on the principle, NOT the interest.
