What is the most painless way to cut some money out of your budget?
Every month we fall just a bit short. What fixes worked for you?

Ditch the home phone and go with a cell phone and cable internet.

Ditch cable tv

Only go out to eat once in the pay period

Raise your insurance deductibles

Pay off your credit cards with a home equity loan and then pay them off each month. You'll save tons of interest.

Resist the urge to get a new car every three to five years.

Write and live by a meaningful budget.

Do not buy gasoline ever!

I suggest you to buy a used Volkswagen with a Diesel Engine (You will save thousands of dollars every year)

Eating out is a huge expense for me. I started eating at home more often and when I did eat out I'd eat maybe half, take the other half with me in a doggy bag and have it for lunch the following day. Probably saved me somewhere around 80 - 90 bucks a month. My average lunch out is 7 dollars so I do that when I can. I don't really cook at home due to time and lack of facilities so I'm confined to eating out a lot. Good luck!

only buy what you must have like food, rent etc. then take a % of left over and buget that for spending. try car pooling, cooking vs eating out, walking, extra job.

Norm
I take a cup of coffee with me from home instead of stopping & buying one on the way to work, started a car pool, quit smoking, started shopping at Walmart for groceries, cut coupons out of the paper, take the kids to the zoo instead of the movies have more lunches at home insteat of at McDonalds etc. Just a few things we have done.

jstmother
Start with expenditures on alcohol and eating out. These are usually the easiest things to get out of, causing no pain. Is your cable TV bill including extra services?

If you want some part time income, write me at jstmother at yahoo.

Tony
Define a need versus a want. Then determine on the maximum of your need for the money. For example home phone versus unlimited calling plan on a cell phone instead of having both.

Don't dine out as much.

Xenagurl
Avoid fast food and outside entertainment. Also look for coupons not just for food but for clothes, you'll be surprised what you can find cheaper than you thought. I hope this helps.

only buy the things you "want" when they are on sale, and cut out the fast food joints! shop around try to find a better deal

The best way I have found is that if you have your paycheck automatically deposited into your account, have a little bit taken out and put into a savings account each time. Or maybe just once a month. That way the savings account is "out of sight, out of mind" and while you're at it, you're earning interest. :) Just make sure the savings account is at the same bank as your checking account, that way you can easily transfer funds in the case that your account starts to go negative.
