What is the point of a credit card?
basically you end up paying $15.00 for what is only worth $8.00 (talking about interest)

Justin
It allows you to spend money you don't have.

Rarely do I have $500 dollars on me.

But with a credit card, I can buy something that's $500 dollars and pay for it later (with interest of course.)

As long as you pay your credit card bill, they're making a killing. And they've got the government on their side. If you decide not to pay the credit card company back, they'll take your paycheck or your posessions.

Many answerers have raised the strengths of having a credit card and personally, I must say I don't own any even though I have the means to.

Let me start with the little inconvenience I've experienced so far by not having any. Well, I always need to get my brother or bf to use theirs to make online accomodation & flight reservations B4 my overseas trip. Also, I have to change more $$$ to ensure I have sufficient since I have no cards at my disposal when I'm overseas. DURING the journey, there are times which I felt pretty insecure especially when thinking that my cash is almost going to be insufficient to last me through my travelling period.

Anyway, I'm still not keen to get one because I'm a thrifty person who likes to be in full control of my full daily financial status so I can save about twice as much compared to one who earns more or less the same salary as me.

Jasmine
You answered your own question. It's so that others can make an unnecessary profit off of you. People want want want it now but you can save yourself a lot of trouble by just waiting until you can actually afford it.

If you don't overspend and you pay off your balance each month, then there is no interest.
You need a credit card to establish good credit. This is monitored by credit agencies who keep a record on your purchases--how much you charged, how often, how long you carried a balance, late payments, etc. This gives you a rating or score.
When you go to purchase a car or house, you will have to get a loan. If you have no credit (no credit cards) or bad credit (low credit score), you will not get a loan.
To start building good credit, get a card with the lowest interest rate you can find. Credit unions are great places for this. You can also look online to compare which banks have the lowest interest rates on credit cards. Check out Susie Orman's website for where to do comparison shopping.
Next, never charge more than you can pay off the next month. Pay your bill in full each month. When you need a loan, it will be easy to get the best interest rate if you have great credit. This will save you tens of thousands of dollars over your lifetime--maybe more.

Actually, credit cards are a good way of building a credit rating so that later on in life you will have a chance to get a mortgage, car loan, etc. when you need one.
As a banker, I see people all the time who are angry that we cannot give them a 200k mortgage, meanwhile they have never even had a credit card so we don't know if they are safe to lend such a large sum of money to (you have to walk before you can run!).
Of course you can sometimes get around that by having someone cosign a loan or mortgage with you, but do you really want mommy on your mortgage? Or do you want it in your name on your own merit?
Also I use my credit card for online shopping, I find it really quick and easy.
By the way, If you pay your balance in full monthly you are not charged any interest. just make sure you don't overspend and that you can pay it off in a month at the most.

The post that follows mine is correct, having well established credit will help you get a lower interest rate on loans.

To separate you from your hard earn money that you work for at your job.

Credit cards are another form of loan sharking. If we as consumers did not have the cards and were not in debt. Would we feel better about ourselves. I think we would feel better.

Example: If you had the chance to go to say this years Super Bowl and you had to pay $4,000 for the ticket for 4 hours of watching it live. Would you? Remember this would not include the round trip plane ticket, food, lodging and other things. The total cost of everything would be $6,500 and the interest rate would be say 18%. WOULD YOU GO! Is it worth going knowing that it would take you several months or years to pay off this bill.

For me I would stay at home watch the game or do something
better with my life.

You would have one less bill to pay, less stress, a true value of your actual worth.

Crystal Violet
It involves the "time cost" of money.

If you can't afford to wait to buy something, and don't have money in the bank - you can still get it.

For example, last month we ran into a pot hole and ruined a tire. We both have to drive to work, and work on different schedules.

Because I have been planning better I did have money in the bank to replace the tire. If this had happened last year? I would have had to "charge it"... Just so we could get to work.

When you get credit you are "buying" money. The interest rate is the "cost" of the money you are getting to use immediately instead of waiting until you have enough saved.

If you know how to use a credit card it can get you a free 30-day loan and you can even make money off of it.

Make sure you pay in full each bill, use on-line payment so you don't need to write a check or use a stamp and get a fee-free cash back card so you'll make money.

I've had credit cards for many years and have yet to pay any interest charges yet have accumulated hundreds of dollars in cash back rewards for things I needed to buy anyway.

BeenAroundTheBlock
There are plenty of credit cards that charge no fees. And if you pay off the entire balance due each month, there are no interest charges either. Assuming you are disciplined enough to do that (as the majority of people are), then you get a free service from the credit card company. Free to you, they are providing you with all of these services:

1. A way to be able to spend money without having to carry around a bunch of cash or a checkbook, and without having to be sure you always have enough cash with you at all times.

2. A free short-term loan from them on whatever you spend in each month.

3. You get receipts and tracking information (a list each month) of what you have spent.

4. The ability to dispute a payment if something goes wrong.

5. Some will actually give you "rewards" or "points" or cash back, or other benefits such as insurance on the things you buy. They will actually pay you to use this service.

6. You get a card that can help to identify you in some situations.

All you need to do to get this great free service is pay off your entire bill each month. Treat your credit card just like it is cash, and never spend more than you can afford to pay when the bill is due. Like the majority of Americans, that is what I do.

basically, they keep you in debt. in reality sometimes we need them to book hotel rooms, reservations, airline tickets, food, gas, etc. you get the point. the trick to using them is to pay off balances within the billing month. that's how you save the interest, etc. that's the only way to use a credit card wisely. hope i enlightened your usage of credit cards.

bigyahbob696
Here's an example of the usefulness of credit cards:

My car is currently being repaired. The bill is $1,500. If the repair center took credit cards (which they don't right now) I could have had my car back already. Now I have to wait until I next week when I my next paycheck.

If you don't get in over your head on credit cards they can be very helpful. I have a card that gives me 5% back on any gasoline purchase. So instead of paying $3.39 for a gallon of gas I end up paying about $3.22 - assuming I pay my bill on time and don't accrue any interest on it.

Also, bank debit cards did not exist until recently. Back then you could only pay by cash on hand, credit card, or by writing a check. Since it's not always a good idea to carry large amounts of cash on you and checks are sometimes not accepted that left credit as the best option.

taco
Using a credit card saves me from carrying cash with me. At end of month I only have to write one check ( or make one phone call) to pay the bills. Secret is to not spend more than you make and avoid interest by paying off total each month. I manage just fine. :)

There are some ways to use them for good.
For instance, if they cut your hours at work and you don't have enough money to pay your rent or buy food, but you know you will be getting more hours soon, it is a good idea. Most credit cards don't charge you interest if you pay it all off by the end of the month. The main point, though, is that you should only use them in TRUE emergencies and only when you know you can pay it all off promptly.

Now_Evergreen
Well i'd personally say it's for convenience and to spend money you don't have yet.

I mean, yeah, you lose money in the end oftentimes, but it's still much more convenient than having to wait until your paycheck which may come bi-weekly, when you really need to buy something like christmas gifts for your kids or whatnot.

I hope that helped.

kremitdforg
The point of the credit card is to be able to purchase an item or items without having to pay for it immediately. It is also necessary for renting cars, booking travel etc.
The probem is, is that most people become trapped by their credit cards by not using it properly. I work as a lending analyst for a credit card company; each day I am looking at about 150-200 credit reports and their accounts with us. It's frightening how easily people can become overwhelemed by credit card debt.
In summary, if used properly or sparingly, a credit card can be extremely handy, especially in an emergency, but if misused it can cause you grief for a long time.
