There are the some of the items that I have:
original marriage certificate
orignal birth certificate
vaccination records
mortgage and title to house
title of your car
paper copy of photo drivers license
original life insurance policies
If you have life insurance through work, attach documentation as to what phone number and address you should call.
Social Security card
All receipts and appraisals of jewelry, artwork, paintings. These should be backed up with insurance for full value. Keep insurance policy in the box as well. Jewelry kept in a box means you will never wear it, so why bother buying it.
Copies of all your credit cards (front and back)
Legal items from your lawyer:
Trusts
Living will (medical directive)
Your personal will
Power of attorney. The person assigned to this is usually your spouse. If you are single, you can designate a relative.
US treasury bonds if you plan to keep to maturity. Otherwise, keep in your home safe.
Stock certificates should NOT be kept in a box because you might want to sell it in the future. It will take you at least a few weeks to sell if the stock tanked. Instead, you create an account with a brokerage firm and mail the certificates to them. Insure the package and mail with receipt requested at the Post Office. The brokerage firm has insurance of $500,000 per account in case your stocks are ever stolen.
All the above should be copied and kept at home in a locked fire-proof safe. |
