The kind of salary that you need depends in large part on the cost of living of the area in which you live and the costs associated with the lifestyle that you choose. The cost of raising your child will vary and increase as your child gets older. You should contact a CPA in your area to help you plan a budget around different living scenarios, e.g. rent vs buy home, public school, vs private school, savings vs debt., cable TV vs basic TV, current health and anticipated health care needs, etc. That will help you to determine how much you'll need.
P.S. You should think beyond just "paying bills" to account too for future costs, e.g. savings and retirement, inflation, increasing costs of raising a child, emergency funds, auto maintenance costs, etc. |

My per month expenses
Mortgage: 1,000
1 Car payment: 250
Two kids in daycare: 800
Our students loans: 400
Car Insurance: 100
Groceries: 600
Gas/Elec: 200
Gas for 2 cars: 100
Cels: 75.00
Loan for Insulin Pump: 75
Nebreska Furn Mart: 100
Health Ins: 185
Retirement: 100
Savings for kids college: 100
My wife and I make a combined 78,000 a year, and after we pay for every thing we have to, we have about $150 left over. Usually, the holidays, birthdays, car and house maintanence, and misc. b.s. that we didn't waqnt to happen takes the rest of the money. Ex: despite paying 185 for insurance every month, I got stuck with a $600 bill from an E.R. visit. Insurace paid $400.
That's life. |

You don't need a 6 figure salary to support two people. You can do it with $35-$40,000, even less. Write out a budget ahead of time. Include monthy expenses, like rent, utilities, groceries, gas, entertainment. If you're not sure how much that will be, make up a reasonable amount, like for groceries, $50-$75. You can make it work if you need it to. |

A lot depends on where you live. Needless to say that it cost 100 times more to live in New York City than it does in Muncie, IN. There are places that frankly I'm astounded that people choose to live or can afford to live. In such cases, "afford" is subjective to them, as you note that it is to you. For instance, I just bought an updated 2,400 Sq Ft 14 year old home that has 4 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, formal DR, huge master suite, etc. By many standards, it's a nice play and I paid $195K for it. Even after the housing bust, this place is $1.2 million in NYC and maybe $400 to $600K in LA. I've seen real estate shows where people in such markets buy something on the order of 500 square foot, 1 bedroom lofts. LOL! So, I simply say to you that when we're talking any sort of professional career, countless jobs can support you, especially when you consider all of your options in housing.
Okay, the careers:
Look, they say that if you enjoy what you do for a living then you'll never go to work a day in your life. Do you realize how many people make good money at their jobs, but are miserable? Ask yourself some basic questions that should include:
1. What is that I'm good at?
2. What is it that I've always sort of thought that I might like to do?
3. Can I get creative with some of my talents and maybe make it a career; e.g., you like people, you like conversation, you like helping others out. That might be a career in sales, a pharmacist, doctor, nurse, charity CEO, etc.
I would strongly encourage you to read the wonderful book, The Purpose Driven Life. After reading this book by Rick Warren, hopefully you'll start to link your possible career choice to your reason for being here.
But again, if it's just a willy nilly choice of a good career, I could never name 'em all. Here are some:
Computers: Networking engineers, database administrators, security experts, and programmer/analysts.
Engineers: Chemical, mechanical, nuclear, etc.
Medical: Doctors, nurses, and specialists in radiology, proctology, podiatry, etc.
Writer. HARD to break into but free to start the process.
College professor.
Financial advisor.
Sales. Higher end items tend to have better commissions; e.g., a friend of ours sales a lot of the specialized equipment used in oil exploration. He can make $40K on one sale. But needless to say, it's a limited market.
Starting your own business.
The list goes on and on.
Lord bless. |

p.s. i consider comfortable like able to pay the bills, like not on welfare basically : )
You already know the answer.
Look at it like this, provided you make a budget it doesn't matter how much you earn as long as you learn to live within your means |

Depends on where you live in the country, because cost of living is different everywhere. It also depends on the quality of life you wish to have. So it's really up to you. Depends how you want to live. |

This all depends on where you live and what you consider comfortable. etc-when you'd like to retire, illinois versus texas, investments... I'd like to retire pretty early...tomorrow if I could. |

well where do u live, ill give you an overview of la
if your two people then u might need a two bedroom thats 1400-1600 a month, at least 250 to eat, if you drive that might be 100 if you dont have car to pay for and that would help the gas, and the bills about 200 and you may want about 100 for clothes and stuff like that so if u want to stay alive in la at least 2000 a month but if you dont want to worry about next month and want a safe life since you have a kid, prolly looking at 3000-4000
but hey you can live in a studio apartment for about 700 a month and all bills are paid for so you can save money that way |

You would be better off starting a career in sales right now. A college degree will cost you more than it's worth. |

Nursing is big. There is always jobs in that field. Teaching is also a good career they always need them. Accounting is another. Something in law not necessary a lawyer. If you are accepted into a college in my opinion you can do anything. That means you are very bright. So good luck. |

I would consider your current bills and your future goals.
Do you want to live in a high end neighborhood in the city, or could you be content with a cottage in the country?
Do you want to drive a really nice car or do you prefer something with a little more...character?
Would you like to be able to invest money for your daughter's future or do you prefer to live a little more on the edge?
One of the biggest things to consider:
Do you want to spend your time focusing on a career and making money the priority in your life, or would you like to have more time to spend with your family?
I mean no malice by this statement, only that many many professionals have to commit so much to their jobs that their family time suffers.
My best advice: think about what you would love to do-what has interested you the most so far, and major in that.
If I had it to do over again I would have gone to college for working with animals so I could do something I loved and still have time to spend with my kids instead of doing something I hate that makes me grumpy at the end of the day.
Good luck! |

Well, I am a believer in making a lot out of a little. I would say you could live on 25,000 for 2 people with no problem if you do things wisely. I mean it takes a lot of self control in spending and choosing things though. I have done it. Ideally you want to make at least $40k so you will have some money for vacations etc as long as you plan wisely. I am going to be a Benefits and Compensation coordinator (HR division) and the avg salary is 86k. I think it will be fun also, only 10 classes to go! |

I would shoot for $80,000 a year. Kids are expensive and as they get older they want to do more and more stuff. Do not choose anything in psychology or social work, there is zero money in it. |

White Kitty has a good suggestion - accounting is a great career. Another one to consider is engineering. Engineering salaries have increased well ahead of inflation due to the fact that so few people choose engineering as a career.
To specifically answer your question, the median household income in the US is around 50,000. If a single earner makes that then they can easily support a household of 2 people.
This amount is in the ballpark of the starting salaries of engineers and accountants. Another field to consider is nursing. They make a respectable income. Teaching will fall short of 50k to start, but you can't beat having the summers off, and you'll still earn enough to raise your daughter. |
