Rob H | What percentage of my income should i save? |

A very good question....save as large of a percentage as you comfortably can. It doesn't mean you should become a scrooge or anything but saving now (if you're still young) will allow you to retire early. |

Here's why.
You need to sit down and make a list of your monthly expenses. Then you need to open a checking account.
Let's say you have a total of $3000 monthly expenses. Every time you get paid, you put in 100% of your income into that checking account until you've put in a total of $3000 that month.
Example: You get paid $1000/week. This means, you put in your first 3 paychecks into that account, that will cover everything you need for that month. Then the rest of your paycheck within that month will be your extra money.
Now what do you do with that extra money? Put it into a savings account? No no no. You need to invest that money with return higher than the inflation rate. There are many mutual funds you can invest your money into.
The reason why you don't want your money sitting in a savings account is because your money will only grow 1%-2% the most, then the bank will take your money and invest it with 8%-12% return. Also that interest you get from the bank is considered an income from which you have to pay taxes.
If you want to save, save where your money grows, not sitting under the bed.
Good luck. |

Thats a vague question. Are you saving for retirement or a trip to Vegas? If you are saving for retirement, then you have to ask when do I want to retire, and at what lifestyle. If you are saving for Vegas, then you should ask why do I want to save my hard earned money so I can lose it in Vegas?
In other words, you have to begin with the end in mind and save toward that goal. |

At least 10%. Don't just let it sit in your checking account, invest it. Don't forget to have some emergency fund available. |

at least 10% of gross income. |

Many professionals recommend 10%, I starting to see a change, that we should be saving as much as 15%.
If you are older and don't have that much time to save, but you have at least around 15 years 20% would be a good idea. |

bare minimum would be 15% for retirement (this would include any employer matches to a 401k), 20% for long term needs (cars, appliances, etc), 10% for short term needs (emergencies, unexpected expenses). I'd say save more than that if you can. |

I agree with at least 10%. Don't put saving off till you are older; your money can accumulate so much more if you start out earlier and you will be glad you did. |

My father, a lifelong financial planner and accountant / CPA, used to drum this into me all during my youth: Pay yourself first by saving 25% of your take home pay. Now, that was old school in the 1970s and times and financial needs change, but saving 25% of your net pay is a good start for anyone. I wish I had paid attention to him. |
