P K | What percentage of your monthly earning do you keep aside as savings? |

I put away approx 14% into retirement investments and 10% for shorter term goals - ie House purchase / college savings for future children / boat / and possible early retirement. |

I set aside 10% as soon as I get my paycheque.
I also make a budget and stick to it (much to my wife's chagrin)
The wife and I also throw all of our $1 bills in a jar every sunday and use those to buy all our Christmas gifts |

I would keep 6 months worth of expenses in a money market account. Once you have saved that I would save 15% of your monthly income in good long term investments. Preferably good growth mutual funds |

We put in a little under 10%. If you can do over that great, if not any little bit helps.
It's hard not to spend what you have, so we have a % of our money automatically go into another account that is for savings only. We never see the money, so we never think to use it. Recently someone did a hit & run to our vehicle. It was better in the longrun to not claim it on our policy, we had it reparied & we were thankful for our savings.
The only time we used our entire savings was building our home or purchasing a decent car. Having debt paid is better than putting it in savings. This has paid off well for us. I think you're really on top of things, it will pay off in the future.
It's not always how much you make, but what you save! Look at all these rich granny's with loads in the bank! |
