Lindsey | What should I do? |
I am a BIG money spender. Once, I have saved up 20 dollars for some hermit crabs, and I blew it on 2 stuffed animals! Right now i'm saving up for a guinea pig. But I found lots of cute clothes I like! Is there an easy way to save my money? Even if I leave my money at home my parents tell me to pay them back! And I end up mad at myself for what I did. I work so hard to get what I want, then I blow it! I only need 20 more dollars to get a guinea pig. I'm afraid i'll blow the money I have saved again. Just today, we passed by a store and I wanted to go in to buy some stupid thing! But my mom said no, thankfully. What should I do about my spending habbits? |

Don't worry....I do the same thing all of the time.....I have money and its almost like I NEED to spend it....or my pocket is going to go on fire....:)
What i do is I concentrate on the one thing that I REALLY want, and tell myself that this is what the money is for, and i AM NOT going to spend it on anything else.....From your other questions, it looks like you really want another guinea pig, so just focus on that, and think of how happy you will be when you get another one! Also how happy your guinea pig will be having a friend!
Good luck my friend.....your pocket is not on fire....just tell yourself that.... :) |

Tough issue but...
How old are you? I would suggest you watch the Dave Ramsey show. A perfect example of how many people are struggling financially because of bad behavior with their money or stupid decisions.
It seems to me that you have no self control over your spending. You need help or else you will be filing for bankrupcy and really struggling financially when you are older.
We all make mistakes with money but the key is to know how to recover. People who are addicted to shopping or spending money should really consider therapy and other treatments to overcome those bad habits or else you can end in a hole with no way out.
I wish you good luck and please consider getting some help for your addiction to over spending. :D |

Get a savings jar.
I was 17 when I got my first hermit crabs. I took all my birthday money and some of what I saved up and it cost about $150 for my 10 gallon set up which four years later is a 100 gallon set up.
You will need to save and put away some money for your pets. I spend on average $20-$40 on the hermit crabs and our fire belly newts every month.
So I think if you want to get a guinea pig you need to start up some serious savings. These animals need regular vet visits plus food and safe habitat.
Draw up yourself a budget with your parents. What ever money you get so much goes towards the pets, so much towards things you need then what ever is left over you can spend shopping. Remember when you're shopping to only buy it if you really want it.
Another thing you might consider is after a month of a few weeks go though all your stuff. Decide what you want and don't use any more. Then sell what ever you don't use or donate to charity. Then you can decide if you want to put this money towards shopping or towards something else you really want. It will help cut down on clutter and make you evaluate your shopping habits. |

You have to get some self-discipline.
Try making a list of the things you really want (i.e. guinea pig). Take it with you when you go to the store. When you see something you are going to spend money on, take out the list and look at it. Ask your self if this purchase is more or less important that those things on your list. |

you need to budget you money on things that you really need. do you really need a guinea pig or stuffed animals? Once you get older you will get tired of them and want to get rid of them, so spend your money wisely |

Keep a log, and each time you buy something, put in the amount of money you had, the amount of money it cost, the amount of money you have now, and why you bought the object. Also, before buying something, think about WHY you want to buy it. Are you just buying it so you can buy it? |

You should learn how to budget. Why don't you open a savings account and put a percentage of your money into the account. You will see your savings account grow not only with your deposits but also from interest earned. You may find that a savings account is not so easily accessible and find over time that what you once thought as a need was a really a want. You might become a millionaire if you start early enough and earn enough money from interest to live a life of comfort without doing a thing. |
