hula wabbit | What should I do with my 401K? |
I have an old 401K from my previous job. My current job won't allow me to roll it into their retirement plan since they do not participate in the same plan. Right now my old 401K is sitting in an account earning interest. What would you suggest I do with it? Covert it to a IRA? Let it ride until I'm of retirement age?
Thanks! |

Do not spend any of this money as some have suggested. By the time you get hit with taxers for taking an early distribution you can lose up to 40 percent of its value.
Do a trustee to trustee direct transfer to a mutual fund company or brokerage company IRA Account. If you qualify I would even convert it to a Roth IRA which will have all future earnings tax free when you withdraw it. ZERO TAX !!! |

You can leave it or roll it to a traditional IRA. Just do not touch your money, just transfer it from one plan to another plan. |

Convert it to an IRA, but quickly. Unless you roll it over, there are tax considerations.
Any banker, investment counselor, or life ins agent will be glad to help you.
When you say " account" do you mean a simple savings account? Not a bank IRA /CD? Or did you leave it with the co where you worked.
If it is a bank ira/cd you are ok. Check with the bank to be sure. |

Compare the advantages and disadvantages of the old 401(k) against any IRA you might open. If the expenses of the old 401(k) are low, it may be better to stay with it. If you are relatively young, you may want to invest a significant portion of the balance in stocks. If the old 401(k) doesn't give you that option, you may be better off converting into an IRA (which can have many investment options). An IRA will usually give you more flexibility than a 401(k), although not everyone needs that flexibility.
But if you are having problems with creditors, keeping the money in the old 401(k) may protect you better. It's basically impossible for creditors to get to your 401(k) account. An IRA is pretty well protected if you declare bankruptcy. But it may not be protected from state court proceedings like garnishment (depending on the laws of your home state), which may occur before you declare bankruptcy. |

Roll it over into an IRA.
Unless you really, really trust your former employer and they have the best 401(k) plan ever and you are making 15%. |

Do not cash it out. You'll pay income taxes and penalties that will take about 40% of the money. You must have at least 5K in there to leave it where it is. If the investment plans are good (Vanguard or Fidelity) then keep the money there in a S&P 500 mutual fund. Interest won't keep up with inflation.

roll it over into an IRA. There are so many more investment opportunities there. |

Roll it over into an IRA. That way, you control it and can select the investment for it. |
