What should I do with the money?
My paycheck was direct deposited twice today. It was a mistake with my employer. A lot of people had the same issue, but on most of their accounts the extra deposit was reversed. But both of the deposits to my account have posted already. Do you think the bank will take the money back out by the end of the business day? What should I do? If I don't tell my bank or my employer, can/will I be held responsible? Do I HAVE to give it back since it was their mistake? :-) Lol

You KNOW you can't keep it so why ask? They will yank out the extra payment without warning, so don't spend it or you will be overdrawn.

This happened to my mom. She didn't say anything, spent the money, and almost a year later, they took it back so she didn't have a paycheck at all for one pay period. If you don't say anything, I would keep it in the bank and not spend it for a while, just in case they realize it, but play dumb and insist you didn't realize it. It isn't exactly the right thing to do, but if money is tight I would hold on to it!!

Give it back or it is stealing.

Can't keep it, it's stealing. Banks ALWAYS find out the errors eventually even if it takes time, and when they do they will take it back. One time my husband checked his account to find he had $999,999.00 LoooL He was shocked and started thinking about all the things he wanted to get or do we can buy a nice house and several sports cars HAHA "OK we knew we can't keep it, but we wanted to live the moment a little!" ;P But seriously, the bank found it right away and withdrew all the money back and our dreams were shattered! LoL

Let them know and give it back before your employer finds out that you knew but didn't say anything, won't look good for you. =|~

Yellow_Eagle
you should tell you boss (it's the right thing to do) or it will haunt you forever and ever...

hootie
Yes you have to give it back. If your employer can prove it was an error you will be held responsible to give the money back. I would give it until next week and if it's still not cleared up, talk to someone in the payroll department where you work.

Craig T
Yes, not only do you have to give it back, you could be subject to CRIMINAL charges if you don't. Not to mention your employer would have grounds to fire you AND deny you unemployment benefits

You need to let your boss and the bank know and get the money returned as soon as possible. Otherwise, you will appear to be a dishonest person.

Serge M
A worker came up to the payroll window and angrily complained, "My payroll check was $20 short this week and I demand you make it up." The payroll officer looked at the record and said. "You are right it was $20 short. But I noticed we overpaid you $20 the week before and you didn't say anything." The worker replied "One mistake I can tolerate, but not two in a row." So if you don't get paid next month, you can use the same argument.

But joking aside, if the situation is not reversed in the next day or two, you should tell your employer. They already know mistakes were made. They will appreciate your helping them if they don't find them all. Sooner or later they will find it anyway.

FATBOY
It is not stealing, but once your employer finds out about the mistake they will ask for the money back and you will have to give it back, whether you spent it or not. Put it in a seperate account, collect the interest on it and when they ask for it back maybe you made a couple of free dollars off of it. They can take it out of your wages automatically if you have already spent it. Your bank doesn't even have anything to do with it really.

they did it by mistake or not, to be honest, you need to give it back since you know where the money comes from.
+there are some employers who will test their workers how honest they are. this happened in our company, five foreigners didn't report the money back. but they were given 2months to look for another job.
<>Honesty is the best thing you have to do dear.

If its a little amount of money just give it back, if it's something like an extra $200, buy yourself something nice.

I don't want to sound like a thief or anything but hey, I need the money

Old Chef
Hey, stupid,
ever hear of honesty?
Chef.
