Buy a camera, fake guns, outfits to start on filming and put them on youtube.
you get more out of it, than just saving 400 dollars for college |

At 17 you can open a student checking account.
(you must be in school - either high school or college).
You will receive an ATM/debit card.
Learning about checking accounts is imperative if you want to use money wisely in college.
After that, just spend half your money, but save half.

I see here that some people say "save for college". I don't know how old you are or how long you have to save, but 300-400 dollars won't even put a dent into your college experience. If you want to put some aside for maybe 1 semester of books during college, then go ahead. I also know this depends on where you attend college. Needless to say, if I were you, I probably wouldn't spend my money on savings for college. That's not me being irresponsible, that's just me being real.
I would probably take my money and put 1/2 in the bank for savings for any sort, whether it be college, car etc. You can determine what you want to use it for later so that you won't make a decision on the spur of the moment.
Take the other half and put it towards something you want. It is your Christmas/birthday money, so spend it on a gift that you'd like such as your camera. That way, you can do both with your money. Get a gift and save.
Happy belated birthday and Merry Christmas! |

Save the money for college.
Buy a "donor" cycle. You might not make it to college.
You cannot bring a dog with you to college.
Hold off with the camera and the props for now. After you have studied in college for a while you will have a better understanding on how to use them effectively.
Hang in there. |

I think you should save for college. I couldn't go anymore because they stopped giving me financial aid and I can't pay for it. I think education is first from all the other choices. |

Hello Jeff:
Not to sound harsh, but with the information you've provided, the likelihood of your attending college is quite low. The person who suggested saving 50% and spending the other on a camera has a good idea.
The Eagle Scout is a good thing to have...Steven Spielberg used photography as one of his Eagle Scout elective merit badges, and helped develop the current Cinematography merit badge. Get the camera and start making films. The Eagle badge may not bring in much, if any, money for college, but I've never met anyone who said "I regret earning the Eagle Scout award."
You might speak with an Air Force or Navy recruiter to see if there is a possibility of joining the armed forces and training to be a cinematographer. You could earn money for college, and make films while you learn. It is a long-shot, but something to explore. Check the internet for film schools and see what scholarship opportunities they offer. Taking out a loan for school will put you deep in debt when you are seeking a job...avoid it at all costs.
Keep on Scoutin' |

Hi Jeff.
I was thinking if you got a dog now, it may be a hassle later when you go to college.
My other thoughts are that you should buy yourself something now, like maybe a camera and save the rest. Save it and don't worry about what it is exactly for, and let it fall into place as you go along -- you will see what you need it for the most down the line.
Happy Holidays!! |

I would save for college. College is very expensive but worth while. Good luck on trying to become a film director/ writer/ producer that is a hard field to break into unless you are really good. I would have something else to tied you over until you make it. |

It would be much better for you to save the money for college. Buying toys are temporary. After college there will be time to buy a motorcycle or other things you may want. I would try to work and save my money for college rather than getting student loans. It takes a lot of time to pay off those loans. It is easy to get student loans but can be difficult to pay back. There are other degrees that don't require a lot of science or math. There are some grants based upon need which do not have to be paid back. Toys don't usually last very long but a college education lasts a lifetime. It will be much easier to afford those toys with a college education. Your grades are not very good so you will need to really apply yourself in order to get your education. The better your grades the easier it will be to get scholarships for college. |

You have money in your hands, and act like you have to spend it already. Bad sign.
Put it somewhere you'll not be able to get at it easily. When the bull hits the fan, you'll have a small nest egg you forgot about.
Trust me. Impulse spending is a curse you'll wish had never invaded you. |

You should start saving money for college as soon as possible. No matter how small the amount of money is. Every dollar counts. You will be happy you did when you are done with college and not burdened by student loan debt. You will actually be able to keep your own money when you graduate and get a job, instead of working for Sallie Mae or some other bank you owe money to. |
