My husband went to hand me a $10 the other day that was folded up, and all I did was take a look and I knew it was a fake (the color was off just slightly, but I've been cashiering for a long time, so I can spot them very easily). He said he got it as change from a store, and of course he was very mad. Unless you show them IN the store that it's fake before you leave, there's no way they will change it for you. Is there a way to get it changed without having to sneakily spend it somewhere?

OOO I didn't know passing money on is a felony...where I used to work, cab drivers always used to sneak us their fakes mixed in with real money. They should have known better then lol. Thx for letting me know that info everyone! |

Call the secret service. Be prepared to tell when and where your recieved the money. You won't get your $10, but it will start an investigation to see if the store is involved. |

thankfully it's only 10 bucks. :)
but if it's soon enough, you could take it back to where he got it from...
or, you could take it the your bank (they won't trade out for it) but they will pass it on to the fed to get it taken out of circulation.
i wouldn't try and pass it, it could be a felony since you *knew* about it. |

no it will get taken by the bank and you get nothing.just go to your local hot dog vendor and pass it on there.there are a lot of fakes just pass them on to someone else ..no worries. |

You can do one of two thing with it.
Take it to the bank and get a receipt for it and deduct it on your taxes as a bad bebit.
Send it to a Federal Bank, you may get a request from them asking you to fill out a form as to how you get it. |

wat the shop should of done is test the money before accepted it so that i dosnt get passed on. i woul personaly take the money back from were he got it and tell them that it is fake. |

If you don't mind losing your money you can turn it in.
Me personally would go back to the store and spend it. They do the same thing. When I got foreign pennies I always just passed it along to someone else. |

Oh this happened to me once and we'd just got it from a bank!!
First thing is I would go back to the store w/your receipt and find the manager. If you got one chances are they either 1.have more in their register or 2.have handed out more to other customers. Tell them you want to file a report w/them and whomever you need to and want an exchange it.
that's all i know to do... as for us and the bank we had to file reports w/ our bank (we tried to deposit it-my husband had cashed his check at the employers bank first) then take the report and fake money to the other bank, tell them which teller we'd got it from and they did give us another bill to replace the one we'd got. |

You are supposed to hand it over to authority. It is a felony for having possession of a counterfeit bill even you obtained it from someplace else.
P.S. Dirtyhip, once a bank receive a counterfeit bill, they are not allowed to give it back to customer, and they will not give a geniune bill back to you if they know they didnt get it from you. Besides, the bank teller will get into trouble also with her/his dept head. That will mean the bankteller did not do the job by checking the bill correctly when accepting from customer |

Go back to the store and demand another bill. If they refuse, call the cops and raise hell. The cops will alert the proper authorities. That's their job. As far as the store goes, the last thing that store wants is an article in the newspaper saying that they gave fake change to a customer then wouldn't make good on it when they got caught. Their cashier is at fault for not spotting the fake bill before giving it out to a customer, especially if, as you say, it was a lousy version of a real bill. |
