What should you do if you pay in a cheque for £10.00, but your bank has written £10,000 in your account book?

I'm guessing that you mean a savings account book, what they write in it means nothing unfortunately, their computer system will only have credited you £10.

That said i'd wait a couple of months and go in and ask them to update the book with any interest thats due, play dumb and say you're not sure if you're due any but you're just curious. If the balance is £10,000 plus a bit of interest, withdraw it all immediately and blow it.

mrstigerstripes
leave it a couple of days they should realise thier mistake and rectify it if not contact them and let them know. whatever you do dont spend it as you will have to pay it back

Wait and see what amount shows up in your account. If its £10,000 and you withdraw it and spend it, the bank will make you pay it back via the courts if need be because you knew the money wasnt yours (provided they realise the mistake that is ). xx

Tell your bank

Evie
Advise the bank asap. The error will eventually be spotted and you wouldn't want to be dishonest and have to accept the consequences would you. You will feel good knowing that you have done the right thing.

You should check your balance and if it's wrong, notify your bank of the error.

don't worry, because believe me they will trace it quick enough !!!
it will take them forever to find your money if they lost it, but when they are going to lose out it will be found quickly !!!

CAPTAIN BEAR
Go back to the bank and tell them of the error. It is a
criminal offense to draw the money out. I remembered
a case where a person was convicted because of a
mistake by the employee of the bank and he drew the
money out and spent it. Its a matter of time before the
bank traces the error to you.

I had a similar thing happen to me & went in to the bank to tell them. Didn't get a thank you or anything but I knew I had done the right thing.

I now have a friend who works in the bank & she says it is very hard for them to find the error as it is a human mistake putting the amount into the computer. However they do always find it in the end & you would have to pay it back.

If you want to try to keep this money legally- you cannot remove it from the bank. Even if you offer it back later a crime has been committed.

What you CAN do is withdraw the cash as a self-addressed bankers draft then get a safe-deposit box in the same bank and place it in. (this stops them simply taking it back- if you placed it in another bank your money could still be taken)

The bank can and probably will strong-arm you into returning the money when they discover the mistake. You can try to 'ransom' it for a small percentage. If they never discover the mistake then the money may be yours.

You can also try writing to the bank telling them you have £10,000 of their money which they have given you un-requested. After this notification (which may get lost in the system) the money becomes yours after 210 days (same happens if you receive goods by mistake you have not paid for).

Health Freak
Leave it be.

The bank will notice their mistake, the bank pay £1121.00 in my account last year and a month later they debitted it back out.

On monday just gone, I paid in £0.15 (to stop me being charged!) They put it in as £15.00, the NEXT DAY they corrected it!

It depends on how long it takes for the bank to notice as they cash up every day

notyou311
Trust me, the bank will find the mistake and charge you interest on the money. Tell them now.

invest in it but make sure you have always got £10.000,and when you get a knock on the door just say come in . how long do you want me to keep old of this , i had to look after it because you lot cant, thats why its there on my table,

honest ppl inform of the error

it is only possible for u to keep the amount if they dont notice it for over 2 yrs, thats highly unlikely and if you touch it before tehn that could still be shown as theft

i was once paid two salaries for several mths and didnt realise, employer was extremely unhelpful and authoritarian in demanding that i pay it back - especially considering i pointed it out to them when i realised their mistake

If you're a REALLY honest person, what you SHOULD do is let them know of their error.
If you're not an honest person, what you COULD do is say absolutely nothing: it's not your error it's there's. Let them figure it out.
What I'd do is keep absolutely schtum, and withdraw all of the £10k. Then I'd open another bank account up with another bank, and let it sit there, gathering interest. If they figure out their mistake and want it back, you still have it to give back, but you'd have gained interest on it too.
If they never ask for it back, keep it.
Even better, close the account NOW after withdrawing everything: then they can't even chase you up.
You lucky thing!
