If you had asked this question when gold was $500 an ounce, I'd say buy a Maple Leaf gold coin as an investment. A bit too late to get on that bandwagon I think.
I'd also consider investing it in a municipal bond fund, there are a lot out there that you can start with a $500 minimum investment. I'm really big on municipal bonds, since they earn tax free interest.
But if the giver is really expecting you to buy merchandise with the cash gift, buy something that will be of lasting value for you. If you don't already have a digital camera and you like photography, get an SLR digital camera. Nikon has several nice models at the $500 price point. Digital cameras are quite reliable, I have an older one that's 9 years old and still works great! |
