What to do? Attend the school of my dreams but make years of massive loan payments?
I got accepted into an incredible private university, one out of only 50 new students accepted, and even got scholarships and grants and other aid. But it still doesn't cover the full $30,000/yr tuition. I'd be spending only about two years there max, but between tuition and living expenses I'd be so far in debt. I could also finish out at my cheap state school I started at, but this is my DREAM and I would be heartbroken to give it up! Please help me make this decision and be at peace with it, I'm already enrolled at new school but realized last night that with interest on top of the initial student loan, I'm screwed :( Help!

You have to make a payment plan, before you say yes or not, cause a dream can be really good but in the moment that you face "reality" if you're gonna just work after for several years just to pay your school... in my opinion I think that's gonna add to your normal life a lot of stress.

For one side if you study in a good school sometimes just sometimes helps you to get a good job or a well pay one, (but it doesn't depends only of which school you finish your studies ok)

In the other side even when the school is good, what it makes you a professional is not just being at a "good school" is what you really want to learn after the classes, the cheap school can be the greatest if you continue or even try to practice after school.

What schools with a name usually do are, that it makes us feel like "better" than say I went to the cheap school, but think seriously how would you feel that your money (a great part of whatever you would earn in a future after school) is only going to pay your school.

If you can compromise yourself to be a great student it doesnt matter where you study, believe me, and actually after you finish school you will enjoy to work and spend the money you earn with less stress and less debts.

Ask first to comparate this, to someone that is paying now their studies, to make the best decision.

Hope have been useful.

Consider it an investment in your future.

The money you'll (hopefully) earn in the future will more than make up for the money you borrowed today.

What are you studying? What is your expected return on the additional investment to go to this school? What I mean is, what is the increase in salary you expect from going to this "DREAM" school, versus the salary you expect if you stay in the state school? Take that salary difference and divide it into the total additional cost of going to your "DREAM" school. The resulting figure is the number of years it will take for you to recoup your investment to attend the private school.

I advise extreme caution because too many people are finding out too late that an English BA, for example, at a $30,000 per year private university is a terrible investment for a degree that at best will get a you a job with a $30,000 per year salary.

The question is why is the private school your "DREAM". Is it for social reasons, bragging rights, or would it provide a better education which would lead to better jobs. You might be able to find average salaries for graduates the two colleges. If difference is enough to pay the increased load payments then do it. If not, its not worth it on a financial level. If there are intangible reasons then you'll just have to decide on your own. Good luck

Look up the average starting salary for what you want to do after college. As long as what you rack up in debt (including interest) isn't much more than that you will be able to pay your loans back after college without difficulty.

If your debt is going to be more than you can afford at the new school you might look into only doing your senior year there or taking summer classes at the cheaper state school so you can graduate early. (fewer semesters = less tuition debt)

If this is your dream to go to this private school then you should definitely go. You don't want to look back on your college years when you're older and have any regrets. You'll only get this opportunity once. Lots of people leave college with huge loans to repay, and they just work hard to pay them off. If you worked hard to get into this school then you should go and enjoy every minute.

Join an ROTC course, and try and get a scholarship from the military.

Don't do it! People don't hire the school or pedigree, they hire the person.

I realize this has been your dream. Think of it this way, when you graduate from the $30k school your student loan will be $300-500/month for 20 years (or so). If you didn't have to pay the loan back at $300/month for 20 years what would you do with that money? What if you put the $300 a month in a mutual fund only earning 9% for 20 years, you would have about $200,000 saved (according to Kiplinger calculator)!!

I suggest you read two books before you make your final decision:
The Millionaire Next Door by Stanley
The Total Money Makeover by Ramsey

You've already made your decision...and I can understand how that can be scary to realize how much it will cost you in $$ in the end...(kinda like buying a $150,000 house, and finding out over the course of a 30 year loan you're paying about $600,000 for the house!!!...I've "swallowed hard" at many a closing of homes I've bought!)...congratulations on making it into a school with high standards. Not many accomplish this goal. Live out your dream. Go to that school. You never know what life may throw your way to help you pay for that school (I'll bet willing to bet that someone will come into your life to make that financial burden seem like it never happened)...the fear of the "unknown" should NEVER hold you back.
If you don't take the chance now, someday, you'll look back with regrets....TRUST ME when I tell you that when you look back on this years from now, you will NOT want to be saying to yourself "If only I had...."
GO FOR IT....live your dream...not many people are lucky enough to be able to do what you are doing....
Sleep like a baby tonight knowing you did the right thing.
