What to do if you paid alot of money for a pair of eye glasses for your son?
I went to a business in town for eye exam and glasses for my son. The exam was $60 dollars, the GLASSES cost me $250 dollars. After that, I went to Wal-mart and found out I could of brought a pair for $100 dollars. I FEEL LIKE I BEEN RIP OFF BY THIS BUSINESS. I did call the business and ask if I can get my money back, and they said SORRY. I FEEL LIKE CANCELING MY CHECK, but will I be paying more in the long run? I wish I took more time to shop for glasses, instead of waste money. LIVE AND LEARN THE HARD WAY.

That does not necessarily mean you were ripped off. All businesses are different, and of course Walmart would be cheaper than an eyeglass store. An eyeglass store probably sells their glasses at a retail price, whereas Walmart can sell them cheaper because they have other products besides eyeglasses (like food and clothes and such). Eyeglasses generally range from $100-300, depending on the brand and the type you get. Thicker glasses probably cost more.

The $250 ones will most likely be better in the long run. The ones you can buy from Wal-Mart are OK if they are getting replaced every year or so but itz OK to stick with the $250.

I paid 700 for my first glasses! Don't feel bad! I don't really even need them unless im driving at night!

You usually get what you paid for. As someone who has worn glasses since third grade, its better to spend a little more on something durable than go cheap and pay for it later. If the eyeglasses place seems expensive, remember that they're the speciality store, and Walmart is a huge department store that just happens to sell glasses.

I, for one, preffer to go to a optometrist in a private office and then buy the glasses seperately. Those docs in the store might miss stuff that other docs in private practice may not.

For example, if your son's vision is just a little skewed, an in-store doc might be just fine. For me, who was disgnosed with an unusual degree of near-sightness when I was a young child, I'm better served in a private practice and a specialty store that can reduce what would otherwise be a very expensive and thick lens.

So don't knock the specialty store. They're the proffesionals; Walmart is just a place to buy a TV and maybe glasses if you just don't really care.

Swallow your pride and the next time shop around...been there, done that.

I fell you I did the same last moth , if I onley took the time to shop around I woul havre save $400.00 dollar on a pair of glasses.

I really wouldn't worry so much about it! As long as you went to a reputable business in town, you probably got some quality goods! Wal-Mart may sell something similar to what you paid $250 for but I'm willing to bet they are nowhere near the quality of what you got. I can get Gucci glasses or a pair of cheap knock-offs from Walmart...which do you think I'll value more? Just make sure your son doesn't accidentally leave them behind!

schmushe
not alot you can do now - just learn from the experience and dont do it again - at least you have a guarentee if they get broken the optition can fix them, whereas shop bought you might have to pay extra

lynn
I did that too. Once they fill the prescription, you can't get a refund.

Live & learn, just like you said.

Don't feel bad about this; you did the right thing. An optometrist is in the business of providing you with the correct lenses and fitting the frames, When you go to a massive multi-retailer like Wal-Mart you have NO idea how competent their people are or what you are getting. Eyes are too important to take chances with, and remember, you get what you pay for. I myself regularly pay well over $300 each for my glasses, but with that comes the assurance that this gentleman knows what he's doing, and he gives me the kind of ongoing follow-up service that I would neither get nor even expect from a bargain outlet. Trust me, you did good!

yeah i paid just as much for my glasses as well and for the exam i paid about 80 ... it's best to look around but sometimes you just need them then and there..

Sorry you got the shaft on that one. The optical at Wal Mart is very good. I payed-out about $150 for the glasses and $50 for exam. I am 35 years old and still find myself getting the shaft on a daily basis. Good luck.

Peace!

Melissa
I know how you feel. The price of quality eyewear is steep. I have noticed, however, that spending the extra money on the better pair is worth it in the long run. They fit better and hold up better. If the business you are purchasing from is any good, they will adjust and do minor repairs for you for free. If your son is very young and is still growing fast, he may not be able to wear the glasses for years like me. But, if he's anything like my son, you need a quality pair so that you aren't buying a new pair every month! No matter what, I think cancelling the check will bring on more frustration and expense than you already have.

Breeze
Let them see the replies to this question, at least you might save someone else the expense. Now they are not going to get your business again,.

If they had refunded some of your money you would have sung their praises, not moaned to everyone you could.

I would also put a letter into the local press.....don't think they are going to like the publicity.

SO WHATEVER COMPANY YOU ARE, DON'T YOU THINK THIS IS A RIP OFF FOR KIDS GLASSES!!!!!

wow...
it is expensive...
may be you can complaint that glasses shop....

Encantadora14
its ok, anyway its over & done with... u learned your lesson.. so next time, get second opinion. u cant just cancel your check, u chose to buy it so u have to pay for it. :(

joshybear
they must have a return policy
say they didnt work out
who cares what they think
you might be better off just keeping though if you figure the $60 you wont get back for the exam and the cost of cancelling the check and getting new ones at Walmart, but at least you will know for next time,
sorry to hear that heppened to you, I hate when I get ripped off too
