What to do when financially ruined?
What do you do to fix your life when you've had to file bankruptcy, a teen turns to heroine and steals everything (but is 26 now-living away)-- too little too late now - all gone, you lose your home after cancer, you're working very hard, you owe a lot of money to a lot of people, your cars keep breaking down, you owe the IRS, you have no health insurance, you lose your job (lay-off) and can't pay car insurance, car insurance lapses and then you can't get new insurance because it costs MORE because you "let it" lapse, you can't get ahead because bad bad things keep happening - for years and years and years (not a new thing), you are feeling helpless and hopeless. There's no help out there because of course you "make too much money" for assistance. No family to help (you don't want to take from anyone anyway) and you are afraid to wake up every morning? Plus you have a wonderful teen who deserves the WORLD and he's gone without for many years himself because of everything?

Added after reading answers
1. I am a female
2. I am not the drug addict - my son was. There was a lot of advice about 12 step programs and don't do drugs. THAT ISN'T MY PROBLEM. I'm NOT asking because I'm feeling sorry for myself. I'm explaining HOW THINGS GOT BAD and wondering how I can get out is all. "Twiddle your thumbs and feel bad for those without thumbs?" First of all, I've been one to give my last dollar to a hungry man on a street. The answers I was looking for were some positive real answers from possibly someone with background in this type of thing. I'm looking for real answers - not for you to feel sorry for me. The praying part IS A GOOD ANSWER - and hearing others stories help too (thank you). But the rest of you, if you are going to answer the question, read the question.

Enroll in a credit counseling program. Also, go to your local Department of Human Resources and apply for every type of aid available. Don't think you won't qualify. Often you can get a lot more than you thought possible. Also, it would be a good idea to see a public health physician. They can direct you to therapy for depression as well as give you more resources.

I really feel sympathy for your situation.

I think that showing your teen that you care about them is far more important than providing materially for them.

It seems to me you have to do four things.

1. Take care of yourself and you family emotionally. Prayer will help you with this.

2. Find a job. I know it will be hard, but you it will be important to getting yourself back on your feet financially. If you get a job that is not making enough to help you in the long term, start with it and keep looking for something better.

3. Take care of your IRS debt and other government debt. A small debt to the IRS can get huge with penalties and interest. You also can not get rid of it with bankruptcy.

4. Take care of your unsecured debt. A credit counselor is probably the place to turn for this.

I turned my life over to a Higher Power and started working a 12 step program. Life didn't get better all at once, however in time it did. Now if I do have problems I do not have to drink, use drugs, or be codependent.

i have been there my friend,i was evicted,my children was seperated from me for nearly two years.to past this dark time in my life, after work,my husband and i spent night, after night in the movies for this period of time, not because we wanted to,but because we were avoiding to go early to the place we were stopping.how i over came this, was because of my faith in the LORD.he renew my mind, made me stronger mentally.and i started to take one day at a time.i made certain my kids had food everyday and i paid off my credit, one at a time by the grace of the MOST HIGH GOD.start off by talking to all those people that you owe money to.visit them in person, and take it one day at a time.life sometimes throws you these curved balls sometimes,if you think your situation is bad, just look over your shoulders, there are people suffering more.goodluck.ps,throw away those negative thoughts.keep talking to your son, don't leave him out.

first think positive, you will overcome this. There are always people willing to listen or to help. If they do accept it. No it is not going to be easy, you'll make it.
Good luck. This payment plan is a good start.

Twiddle your thumbs, that is, if you have thumbs. If not, feel sorry for those without thumbs.

Oh what the heck, life is to damn short for all this mess....
Reality says your bankrupt and your son is a heroin addict...Accept it and die a happy man!
Dont accept it and dwell in it all your life, you will die of insanity, or plead insanity and be in an institution untill you die....
Start fresh...Take it one day at a time....Achieve small goals, here a little, there a little....Your son is a grown boy....he has his own mess to clean up.....

Hound Dog
Consider yourself blessed. Many people go through life never hitting rock-bottom and therefore never needing God in their life. Seek first the kingdom of God and all else follows. God sent Jesus to act as a mediator between God and us.(That's a pretty simple way to describe it)
Study about Jesus' life and make up your own mind. What do you have to lose? I'll be praying for you.

HunnyMommy
file for bankruptcy and start over fresh, because it will take you longer to simply clean up your credit.

well the first thing you should do is go to a good church and stay clean. Doing drugs will make it worse and it will make you look bad in front of your teen. Second, dont sweat it with the bankruptcy, it will go away in about 7 years, you just need to tough it out...remember donald trump and other rich people went through bankruptcy too as well. Third you need to start over with a job, any job for right now to support yourself until you get a better one, you might want to consider moving out to a different place, and if youre a citizen, use some of the assistance programs the government has available for you. You just need to stick chest out and move on.
