I have written about this before and this is what my research has come up with.
Very short term gain for the minimum wage earner less than 6 weeks but this will have a very far reaching effect on the population as a whole. The market will catch up in about 6 weeks and then for the low wager their gain is gone but the folks that are on fixed income they will fall short very quickly. groceries will be up and yet the folks on Social Security have no increase to offset the increases, Rents will go up as will everything else and in the end the American dollar will go down in value. Some of you may think that this is bull how ever if you are old enough to remember what has happened every time we have done this in the past then you know what I have just written is correct. Here is something that you should look at when considering the increase. Remember the the world functions on the American dollar, the less value the dollar the more goods are going to cost on the world market, you can say I don't give a damn about the world market I don't want a Japanese car anyways. maybe not but you are still going to want gasoline for the American car that you are driving and the less the value of the American dollar the more expensive the cost of a barrel of oil. Who would this effect mostly? The folks with out any education, college students, high school students, high school drop outs, This list can go on for ever but the thing that is most noticeable is that these same folks could seek other employment or work to subsidize the income that they have in most cases temporarily. So the get and increase that will effectively last about 6 weeks but you will be paying more for gasoline and everything else from now on. I have heard several different amounts that they would like to increase the wage to but using the one that I have heard the most it will have an effect on the market of about 30%, also remember that anyone that is earning over the $7.50 that they are talking about is not going to get an increase and there by will take a reduction in pay (buying power) and guess what that person who is now earning maybe $8.00 and hour may have worked for that increase for several years and now goes back on the bottom of the pile.
note to all of the supporters of the increase: I really understand your feelings but in the end employers will be releasing folks and employment will go down. AS an employer I may only have money enough to hire four folks now and if I have to increase their wages that is fine I will release one of them and if I still don't I will release another until I can make payroll and I will expect more from them I should have mentioned it that car that you think you really can afford but with the increase you will be able to buy it,.....well that $9000 KIA is now going to cost about $12,000 and is more untouchable than before. THERE IS A OLD SAYING, "LESS IS MORE" it sure is true about wages. You want more earn it don't mandate it. |

More jobs will go overseas. Everything locally produced or services locally provided will be more expensive. A the end, the people who benefited from the increase will be worse off anyway.
Every time the governmen tries to monkey with a free market, the results are never good for anybody. |

I see that a lot of posters are under the understanding that increasing the minimum wage is such a good thing because it will give them more money. That is only partially true. When minimum wages go up so must prices. Yeah minimum wage might go up .75 an hour but every thing else goes up .50-$1.00 so there no "more" money in your pocket you are right in the same place you were before the increase. |

If minimum wage increased there might be less jobs available, because employers would have to pay more to thier employees. This being the case.. employers would not hire more people and they would require those that are hired to work more to produce the same amount of work. It all comes down on how to make that dollar stretch and make the most profit... in the employers view.
As far as your second question yeah I think people will find jobs to help them survive and possibly more.. but those with the most education and skills will get them first.
For your last question... I think laws and politics have tried to help with the problem of poverty with goverment programs, but clearly its not enough. |

In order for minimum wage to increase, everything else must be increasing at a rate strong enough for the two to support eachother. It would not increase at a time when the economy is in downfall |

The cost of living will go up. When businesses and comanies have to pay more for labor the cost is then transferred to the customers. Also, another danger is that employers will look to cheaper forms of labor (illegal immigrants) putting many out of their jobs. Increasing minimum wage is not transferred to those who have been working in a company either. If you have worked your way up to earning $8.00 an hour over two years. A new less experienced worker will enter into a lessor position mking almost the same amount. It sound great to those just entering the workforce but an increase in minumum wage is a bad idea!! |

yes the price of your cheeseburger may rise though, people need to be motivated to succeed in a capitalistic society unless they have a physical or mental handicap there is no need for them to work at a minimum wage job, finding cures for laziness will solve poverty, where I live the average minimum wage is like 8 bucks an hour, I think the governments is like $5.85, so the market is deciding on its own without government intervention |

So an extent there is a need for a mandated minimum wage, and this must be increased on occasion to meet the needs of inflation. But if minimum wage increases faster than the rate of inflation, then businesses have two choices, cut costs (usually by decreasing employees) or raising prices, which counters the effect of increasing the minimum wage increase, because it causes a false increase in the rate of inflation.
In the long run, nobody benefits from significant increases in drastic increases in the minimum wage. There are short term benefits, but usually, those who work in minimum wage jobs, have no other recourse, and those are the first jobs cut in a drastic minimum wage increase.
If the minimum wage is increased from $5.85 an hour to over $9.00 an hour, there will be a lot of teenage people who will not find the jobs they need. Senior citizens will need to start working in the minimum wage jobs because their incomes will no longer meet the cost of living. |

Increasing minimum wage hurts consumers and workers, but it hurts the poorest people most. Minimum wage increases ultimately reduce consumption and fuel inflation.
Consider our own minimum wage laws. Why do people vote to raise minimum wage? This is discriminatory. It causes higher unemployment and discourages low wage earners. The message is "You do not have any value to add to society".

Minimum wage law equates to giving to the rich from the poor. |

This would cause even more problems for the U.S. economy then it already has. People don't understand the fact that the government cannot keep on printing money to hand out to people, and yes more people would lose there jobs in March then what already happened in February. |

In the long run jobs will be lost. Anytime the government artificially increases the price for anything, it subdues demand for that product or service. If labor costs more, employers will use less of it through more automation and shipping jobs overseas. The best way for anybody to increase their wages is to improve themselves, make themselves more efficient and more valuable. Depending on increases in the minimum wage to improve their lot in life is a recipe for failure. |

Will decrease unemployment, as there is a bigger insentive to work.
But more people earning means more money, which means more buying..
More buying can usually lead to inflation =/ |
