Talk to an investment rep. Buy a house and invest the rest. Also depends on the amount. Just one million isn't anything really.

To help the poor and and the ones in need of desperate help!!!

If I won the lottery or otherwise suddenly became a millionaire I would continue along my current investing path; I'd just have a big jump ahead in my goals.

1. I'd pay off my condo mortgage ($115,000).
2. I'd buy a $500,000 townhome (pay for 75% in cash so I can afford the mortgage on my income) and rent out my condo for income. ($330,000).
2. I'd put a LOT of it in cash because I have many short term needs: put ($40,000) in emergency account; put ($100,000) aside for a wedding; put ($100,000) aside for pregnancy/maternity leave; put ($50,000) aside for new car
3. I'd max my retirement accounts each year (appx $20,500 for Roth IRA and 401k).
4. I'd take a 6 week Mediterranean vacation ($20,000).

That totals $775,500 that would be invested/spent immediately. I'd put the remaining $224,500 in a diversified mix of index funds, bonds, and sector funds to be used at a later date to invest in real estate or start a business. I'd also take enough interest from that stash each year to max out my retirement funds (since I can't afford yet to max them from my own income).

Retire! Put most of it into a mix of mutual and hedge funds (hedge funds are very aggressive!). Make my money work for me instead of depleting it in a couple of years - I'd be set the rest of my life!

purchase a home in a warm climate, with a pool, etc. Also start traveling more.

I will purchase home in Honolulu, Hawaii!

well 1 million isn't much money, but 2 million you could live off the interest.

but if it was sudden, I'd buy a home and invest the rest in real-estate and stock

still in college here, mom is a millionaire but she still works part time, dad passed.

if your a multimillionaire then you can start helping others, but 1 million isn't enought to play around with if you to much, not in the long run at least.

Most of our friends have at least a million.
and all I hear is .. so and so spent to much on this, they can't afford this, they need to sell this to do this, blah blah blah.
