Additional Details
for those who keep assuming i declared bankruptcy because of credit card debt-u're wrong!! i've never even had one credit card.. my bankruptcy case was mostly for medical bills and other bills that i couldnt afford to pay.

you can apply for this credit card, http://www.idbaru.com/creditcard . its made for people like you who have no credit history or bad credit.

Why do you want to get back in debt right after a bankruptcy? I advise you to live within your means.

M O
I would suggest taking a pass on the credit cards if bankruptcy was needed.

Roy R
none thats just asking for more debt. go with cash!

Seriously, do you *really* think a credit card is a good idea? Isnt that just going back to your old ways (which, needless to say, didnt work out very well)

If you've had to file BK, then you must change your spending habits. If you cant afford it, you simply cant afford it.
Save your cash until you can afford it. Stop buying on credit.

Getting a credit card after bankruptcy is a bad idea. It's the start of putting you in a bad situation again. If you need a card because of not having cash or a check handy, I suggest getting a debit card. Most can be used as either credit or debit, making it acceptable anywhere that accepts cards.

Try to build credit without credit cards.
Just take credit and pay it in time, and your credit score will be set. To avoid common mistakes while buiding credit, I recommend this one - http://creditreport.undonet.com - to monitor changes in you score and pre-estimate future scores for different scenarios of payments.

novabook
go to this site and hit the sub prime tab there are some guaranteed approval cards you can apply for

okay, I understand that your bankruptcy wasn't due to credit cards, but why even dance around with debt? Try building an emergency fund to keep in savings account (building interest) and use it only the case of a real emergency, like your car breaks down, and not macy's is having a sale.

WesD
can't go wrong with a VISA but if you've had problems with money in the past I probably wouldn't run out and get a new credit card to get yourself back into trouble.

luna6887
do you mean after it's been taken completely off your credit report? if so, try capital one! i LOVE them! every 5 months they raise your limit and they report to the 3 major credit bureau's.

i check everything out on http://www.creditcards.com/

oh i also heard that citi is easy, but they haven't approved me.

if it's still on your credit report, you might be forced to get a secured credit card. i don't really know how those work, but the website i just gave you shows them to you.

hope this helps!

Would it not be a good idea to steer clear of credit cards especially in your case.
Make sure if you are going to get one and even if you can that it has 9% or less APR rate.

orchard bank is a good one for bad credit/bankruptcy... i would type in "Bad credit credit cards" or "bankrupty credit cards" in your search bar, I have a friend that had $40,000 in credit card debt, had a bankruptcy, wiped it all out clean, then got approved with a new card in two months! Personally, I think getting a new card is not smart unless you a trying to rebuild your credt, but it is also not fair to other tax paying citizens who absorb the cost of bankruptcy for others through taxes, and then they go and get more cards they can not pay... so please be careful. Someone pays for the loss of bakruptcy when you get let off the hook. :) Good luck!

Capital One. I got one 3 months after a Chapter 7. DO NOT use HSBC or Orchard Bank, they will extend credit to you but their rates are horrible.

Capital One

apply for the secured card. $500-$750 limit

u just pay $75

-psst I had to declare bankrupcy a while back too. and no matter which way you cut it you need to get a credit card not only to rebuild credit but for life in general.... GOOD LUCK!!!! - it gets easier trust me.

I'll tell you what not to do. Don't apply for anything other than a well known company (i.e. Discover, Visa, Mastercard, AmEx). Lots of companies will offer credit cards to supposedly help you "build" your credit, and a lot of them are scams and you're forced to only use certain retailers. Stick with a known company. I personally prefer Discover.

Feeling Mutual
You should get a secured VISA or MASTERCARD from the bank in which you have your savings and checking accounts.

SECURED, means you put like $1,000 into an account, and the card is secured by that money, so you make interest on that also, but it will have a $1,000 limit..

One with no annual fee, and pay the entire amount off every month. If you can find one, get one that pays cash back every time you use it. This means instead of costing you money, it will make you money.

The interest rate is irrevelant since you will pay it ALL OFF EVERY MONTH ON TIME.

Now you will not be able to take that $1,000 or so out while you have this credit card. But that is okay, $1,000 is usually the average minimum balance for all accounts to get "free checking", free money orders, free cashier's checks, notary service, and free safe deposit banks.

Which will pay for itself in a few years.

The easy part, is that no bank will turn down an application for a secured credit card. They have no risk, if you file another bankruptcy, they still have their money. Secured debts cannot be discharged in a bankruptcy.
