What would happen if a computer error set everyone's bank balance to zero worldwide, right now?
governments, corporations, individuals, charities, everyone. All zero. And for fun, you can set the debts to zero as well.
how many millions would die? who would they be?
or would we all say "oh well" and carry on?

and while you're at it, my sauna question is being neglected...

I would take great pleasure in seeing the rich brought down to the average mans level.

Well, there would be hard copies (you know, paper copies) to prove who had how much. Don't think for a second banks are dumb enough to not do that. They do that as much for themselves as their clients, because that money is how they make their money. Same with governments, and everyone. It's all backed up to hard copies, so I think we're very safe. If the money burns, oh well, it's backed by the government, and as long as the government still exists, we'll be fine.

I would sit in a sauna and let everyone else see whats it like to have my bank balance Zero.

Backups my friend. Financial institutions have massively redundant backup systems, including some that are physically separated from the networked ones. You might have a backlash when it went public, if it went public, because folks would have their trust shaken, but if something happened that destroyed the computer data and all the backups it would have to be so catastrophic that yes...millions would die.

The Banks have a back up location in a secret location. If something terrible happens to their existing mainframe system, a secret building with identical systems is in operation immediately.

scallywag
I would be better off because my overdraft would be gone.

There are backups at every bank. There are back ups to back ups. The banks would not gain by this unless they meant to steal from us. So the backups would be employed and the money would reappear.

The banks would run their back-ups

jrlatmit
Actually, they would probably restore from backups within a fairly short period of time.

Something like this happened to a Canadian bank a couple of years back. They were down for a day or two.
