As I learned from experience, anyone who has $20,000 and is ridden in debt should take the entire $20,000 (if that's what it equates to) and pay their entire debts off. If no debt than the individual can take the money and invest in an IRA (preferably Roth IRA) and contribute to a 401(k) if your employee offers the luxury of employer's match (if not, a 401(k) isn't worth the hassle). Set up an emergency fund as well. Now, if I had $20,000 (since I'm debt free, have a Roth, emergency fund, and investments), I would go to my financial advisor whom I greatly trust and get his advise on how to make that $20,000 work for me not for me to work for it. If you really risk taker, then you can buy stock. You can do research on what stock to buy. But you can lose money. So, probably you can put it into IRA or buy ETF.
Others is to put into saving account which yield 5% right now. But the interest gain, of course, is taxable.
Probably the best is IRA, I think. |

If you are renting, and in the New York area you should be able to buy a SMALL condo with this as the down payment..if that does not interest you invest in index mutual funds 6%-20% and up. |
