What would you do, if you suddenly got say..5 million dollars? ?

Pay off the credit cards, and my house. Then I would buy some acres of heavily wooded land and build a very small cabin (with all the plumbing and amenities, of course) in the middle of my woods. Then I'd have to decide what to do about my day job. :-)

i'd buy the biggest bottle of helium i could find, a couple of large garbage bags, two long tubes of surgical hose, and a bungee cable to go around my waist

I'd hook up everything, lay on my bed and say good buy world

I would buy a house and go to college and get multiple degrees so I can build a nice career to maintain that house. Buy a car and then invest in the stock market and then saving the rest.

There is a funny (somewhat) Chapter in Andrew Tobia's book "Still the only investment guide you will ever need" (3rd or 4th edition now) on that exact subject.

To recap, buy a bigger house. Pay off all your bills. Set aside 1 year of living expenses. Put the balance in 1/3's in a money market fund, a no load index domestic stocks mutual fund and a no load index foreign stocks fund. And then ignore it. Check on it quarterly maybe.

I like Vanguard for its very low cost no load mutual index funds.

well, i'd save a lot of it for retirement, then a college fund, and get a house and car full payment so you don't have to worry about mortgage or loans, and set aside more for bills and taxes, and then use some to go shopping with. be smart with your money!! maybe donate to a charity? oh and ps. kids cost a LOT!

♥oh baby! ♥
i would keep 1 million for myself...give 1 million to my parents.. give my 3 sisters half a million each.. and give the rest to charity. no joke.

secure my college education

Throw most of it in a high rate long term CD due to economic crisis right now. CDs wont go down guaranteed until the economic situation gets better then throw it in a mutual fund or stocks if you're good at that.

I'm not a shopping obsessed consumer like most Americans so I'd get a hybrid or gas saver finally be able to buy healthy groceries put a down on 2 houses and thats that.

Get my a$$ out of debt, buy a new vehicle and a small house and invest the rest carefully.

After paying taxes I would earmark half of it for charity, then use the rest to help my friend start a business and place the rest in the bank.

I don't like spending money on myself if I don't have to, so I'd just hold onto the rest as a "just in case". The money I would set aside for charity I would place in a long term, high interest CD account and only use the interest accrued from it to donate to various charities. That way the money wouldn't run out and there'd always be something for charities.
