Hmmm . . . did you write this question specifically for me? :-)
If someone in this position was 35 years old, then he probably has saved money over the years pretty aggressively. He's probably moderately thrifty as a result, living on about $40k per year. The $500k isn't enough to retire on yet, but his plan is to work 5-7 more years, until his FTI ("Forget This Index") is 1000:
FTI = Age * Net Worth / Yearly Expenses
Currently, 35 * 500k / 40k = 438.
Age 42: 42 * 1.2M /49 k = 1029.
To get from 500k to 1.2M, he'd need to invest 30% per year and make a 10% return on investment.
That's the plan. :-) And that doesn't include equity in the home (or the fact that those starting numbers might be a bit low).

Find ways to make the $100k at least $150k per year. Always strive to make more money :-).
Close to 100k now...ways away from the 1/2m portfolio. |

Continue to develop your insane need to acquire 'things'. Work for yourself for the next 40 - 50 years, and do nothing of value for mankind in general. Lose your family and children. Stress your body. Die early and leave it all piled up for your heirs to ruin their lives over. Cool!
PS. $100K a year is not much money unless you live in parts of the Midwest or the South. In California or New York, that's hardly enough to live decently. |

i would be able to pay off our debt (not that much, though), set aside a college fund for the kids, buy my husband and new truck when he gets back from thailand and invest and live our simple lives.
toss a plan for retirement in there, too!
thanks for the great job and portfolio! |

QUIT!! Since I'm retired and doing whatever I want to do I would hate to have the responsibility that has to go with a job. Therefore I would eliminate the thing interfering with my fun. |

Keep the job first, Set aside 20% of the money you earn for savings, invest 20% and live on the rest. As for the 1/2 million portfolio, it depends on your ages. As for me I have 30% growth stock, 40% blue chips, 10% bonds, 10% T-bills and 10% in speculative investments. |

Interesting question...what would I do? Well, if the question is dealing with after tax dollars, then I could use $75,000 of it and become debt free once and for all. I've lived before on $25,000 and so I now know the difference between a "need" and a "Want". It's the "wants" that kill us and get us in over our heads in debts. As for the portfolio, that needs to be earning in todays market 10% - 15% and NOT touched until needed for retirement, in which I don't plan to do anyway...look at Warren Buffet... *grins* .. looks good at his age and he's still working!!!
But, the desire for me is to take care of my family as well as donate 25% each yr to charities and to help others less fortunate. |

Hope this isn't a question about what to do with these finances, if this is a "dream" question - I wouldn't set my alarm clock to get up any more and I'd wipe my butt with a $100 bill just to see what it feels like and thank my husband for allowing me to stay home with my kids - fer sure! |
