the best thing i could think of is to either pay off debts (if you have any) or save. Especially with the hard times right now, its best to have extra cash stashed away for emergencies, dontgo out and be an idiot spending it all on usless **** like mp3 or games. |

I would pay off debts that are only absolutely necessary. For example if you happen to have fines due at the courthouse. The rest I would put away in a shoebox for when you need it. But, knowing me, I would probably take $100 to the casino and take four spins off the $25 slot machine. Its been worth my while a couple times in the past. |

wow came across some extra money. your lucky. i would splurge on myself a bit. then save it or find someone who knows what they are doing in the stock market to advise you on how to use it that way. |

If you have any high interest (>~7%) loans, repay them. Use whatever remains to fund a Roth IRA and purchase a low-cost index fund such as SPY, then forget that you own until you're at least 59.5. Don't attempt to time the market, as others here have suggested.

this is what i would do man...take 2k put it in a savings account...with interest over time..that money will add up and you will be rewarded..i donno how old you are right now..but with my age id take 4k and put it in a savigns account..with the rest..id pump a full tank of gas and spend the rest during this holiday season |

1. An investment in a house would be great you can earn LOTS of money (my mom actucally wants me and my sisters to put are money together buy a house nd invest in it)
2. Go on a trip to mexico disneyland with a couple of friends hawaii.....
3. Take a day for yourself and do what u what to do and not have to worri about money

Ok, good that you have 5k in hand to save. I will tell what I wouldn't do and then what I would:
a) I wouldn't invest in stock market - currently that is the worst thing to do and the market hasn't bottomed yet and the recovery is no where in sight.
b) I wouldn't put it under my matress, I don't want to sleep over my money carelessly
c) I wouldn't save it in bank because i would get meager 3% interest rate and that is really nothing. Imagine you saving 5K today and getting 5750$ at the end of 5 years "if" the bank didn't go bankrupt and your money is safe.
d) I wouldn't lend it to someone for a higher interest rate.
e) I wouldn't buy a house under any circumstances, people are not having enough money to pay off their credit cards and repay their home loans or vehicle loans, do you expect a buyer in a couple of years, who will pay "more" for the same house??? Isn't it ridiculous?
What I would do:
a) I would invest in GOLD - this is a safe heaven in all the times.
Logon to Kitco.com/markets - Open a "pool" account and purchase gold/silver/platinum (not palladium and rhodium) for your money and hold those metals in your account.
-- Results - Every investor would return to gold for hedging in tough market situations which would increase the price of gold eventually. How long is eventually? (6 to 12 months).
Returns would be in the range of 15% min in that period. There will be ups and down in that market too, so I would invest in 3 stages (or may be 2). First i would invest 2K and if the price goes down (by 10% or so), i would buy for another 1.5k and again for 1.5k. Though you may lose money in the market shake ups, you will finally arrive at profits - FOR SURE.
-- Second thing i would do is, change the currency to some other country's currency and preserve it. When the inflation of dollars comes into picture, you would get good benefits, but this is very risky, this will be my last option.
-- Invest in other countries, like India, where you get 11% per annum interest rate, and in 5 years, you can see 7500$ in your hand.
NOTE: all are my personal opinions based on current economy and stock market situation. Please think and follow what your heart says. |

I wouldn't invest at the moment. I'd probably save it, but under my matress, for now. Wait for the economy to calm down a little, then put it in the bank where it can gain interest, and in stocks. Don't go spending that money, being smart about it can multiply the amount you have. |
