First thing I would do is bank it. The reason for this is a good bank will always tell you if they think you are being wasteful with your money. This way I have their expertise to regulate perhaps my own lack of it, in managing such large sums of money. To protect myself from myself, I would put $3 million into a fixed trust with the interest rolling over or being able to be used as a withdraw able salaried account.
Then I would probably take some time out on a tropical holiday for 3 or 4 weeks while I started scanning my brain for some productive ideas to do with some of my money. Having protected over 60% of my asset, I would come back to my home town, maybe buy a house, and new family car and hope that my sudden change of status would attract some genuine female companionship. No gold diggers allowed. This would either attract a genuine wife or a very good con woman.
I would then either ask her to marry me, or say goodbye. As this a hyperthetical exercise I am struggling to describe any actions in the desired details that your words "Elaborate and exciting" implies. I therefore conclude that my answer might well be a touch too conservative for your choice of best answer. Never mind if it provides some one else's imagination with a foundation to build upon, then it has not been a total waste.
In a few days I will be disappearing off this site for most likely quite an extended period due to financial problems etc. I am not sure if or when I will be able to return. I would like to take this opportunity to humbly thank you all for your intelligent contributions and answers to my questions. I have not always agreed with every thing that I read, but hey that's life. I always appreciate constructive logical argument from either gender and I am pleased to say I have experienced both on many occasions. To the jokers I always enjoy a good laugh and perhaps should pursue this endeavour more often. Finally to the half witted answers with neither rhyme nor reason attached. Well "No comment" sums it up fairly well I think. |

first of all, My husband and I would probably quit our jobs (early retirement), then I would pay off all our bills (mine & my husbands only, NO family or relatives), then we would travel all over Europe, go shopping, then we come back & buy 2 new cars! whatever kind we want, then we will buy a beautiful Mansion, go shopping again, buy all kinds of stuff we need for our house. We would not work but we would both go to school full time to educate ourselves, after finishing school, maybe start a business??? don't know but do whatever we want for the rest of our lives. |

I would buy a hotel/spa/restaurant on a beach somewhere and live life as a permatourist. Send my children to the best colleges, and travel. |

I'd hoard a lot of it... the economy is in the crapper at the moment and I don't want to lose a bunch of it on crap investments or a bank collapsing.
That said:
-Pay off debt (it's only $5k)
-Pay off my S2000 and get some rims for it (I know, I know... irresponsible... whatever... can't take the stuff with my when I die), maybe a turbo kit and some other goodies.
-I'd probably buy my parents a house so they could finally not have to worry about things like rent and homeownership. They live in rural MA so this would only set me back like $200k, which is more than worth it *for my parents*.
-I, personally, would probably buy an old farm in Japan and move there to write books. The low overhead of the cost of living on my own farm in a somewhat unlikely place to own a farm, and the isolation from being the only non-Japanese person there would be great fuel for writing my books. Like the guy above said: solar panels, windmills, reclaimed water, soymilk. Haha. I've been a vegetarian for eight years so I don't really require much for sustenance.
That'd all still end up leaving over 4 mil... again, much of which I'd probably hoard for the time being, and much of which I'd probably turn over to investment firms to handle for me since I'm no financial genius. |

Assuming this is post tax income...I would, in rough numbers...
- Put around $500,000 in various CD accounts to ensure that I have, at the very least, an FDIC insured source of retirement by the time I'm 65 or so.
- Put around $1M in various index tracked funds like an S&P 500 Index Fund.
- Put around $1M into an aggressive mutual fund (something semi-risky to balance my portfolio)
- Set up a scholarship at my undergraduate university ($500,000 endowment)
- Buy my folks a house (nothing fancy, about $500K) And yes, $500K is nothing fancy in Los Angeles... :-(
- Use about $250K to pay my fiancée's way through medical school, pay off both of our student loans
- $250K is used as a down payment on a home (I will get a mortgage for the tax shield)
- Finally, $1M is used as startup capital to start a consulting firm focusing on consumer electronics and video games.
That's what I'd do with $5m. Maybe not too exciting, but I tried. |

I would take 4 million of it and invest it in a bond heavy mutual fund to guarantee me a constant return of around 4-5% to fund me for the rest of my life. then i would buy a giant house, quit my job, and buy about 20 old-style VW vans and drive around with an entourage of 40 people just wandering the country. |

Spend one million on debt, bills and what ever I want to get the spending out of my system and to get rid of all my debt.
-a new luxury car with as many accessories as possible
-some property in the mountains of Virginia w/ cabin
-New huge HDTV and entertainments systems
-go to the restaurants I always wanted to go to but could never afford.
Three million will go into a mutual fund. I will live off of the interest from it.
250,000 will go into my retirement account.
125,000 will go into stocks and bonds.
125,000 to charity spread over a couple of years.
The rest will be birthday and Christmas presents to my family and friends.
I might keep my job for fun, because it gets boring at home. I will also be able to do what ever job I want regardless of the pay. It will keep me busy and it will give me a good record, just in case I need to get back into the job market. |
