At your age you can open an account. Most accounts come with the option to have a debit card, you wont be able to borrow from the bank but you can use this card to pay for items at the till and you account will be credited.

Old geezer here says no to the debit card idea to start putting you in debt. Learn the difference between debts and bills then stay away from debts. Even college-wise, go to the cheapest college. In the end, it is the level of intelligence and dedication to study a student has not what school he went to. If you are a SERIOUS student, like many Asian students and muslim students are, the best schools will beg for you and pay your way(meaning debt-free).
Save, save, save! Start by studying, attending meetings centered around wealth-building. Example: www.better-investing.org
Some of the best jobs in America are on the railroads(US Railroad Retirement Board). You make plenty money and get a greater pension than social security can ever offer. Jobs such as the post office and public transit are lite-weights compared to the RR. You will get a cash card which you can use to pay things online or at the shops plus get money out of the cash machine. It will probably be a Solo or a Vise Electron.
When your 18 you will probably get a proper debit card by Mastercard or Visa.
A debit card or cash card though is linked directly to your bank account so you can't go overdrawn in most cases if you don't have the cash in the bank unless you have a pre-arranged overdraft. |

I think that you really should get a debit card. It will teach you a lot about managing your finances and how correctly save and spend money. You can definitely get a debit card. All you need to do is open up a checking account if you dont already have one, and tell the bank you would like a debit card. It is that easy. The one thing to remember with a debit card is that you can only spend as much as you have in your checking account. |

If you are not working and have no income, how on earth do you think you can have a debit card? You have to have money before you can spend it.
You have to be over 18 to have your own bank account, or else your parents need to sign you up for an account with them as trustees. There are some "student accounts" (e.g. Chase has them) for teens, but parents control the terms of and access to the account.
Debit cards are only available with checking accounts, not savings accounts. Savings accounts can have an ATM card so that you can make deposits and withdrawals through the bank's ATMs.
After you turn 18 and have a job and income, you can get your own checking account with a debit card. |

I don't think that you can get a Debit Card at 16. I know that when I was that age and was with HSBC, I couldn't People are saying that they have a debit card at that age. I doubt it. There is a difference between a debit card and a kids card. Once you are over 14, there is a certain type of card you can get that allows you to obtain goods from shops but it certainly isn't a debit card. And the transaction can't complete in the store until the chip&pin machine has confirmed that there is sufficient funding to cover the cost of the goods. |

You need to have money in a bank account in order to obtain a debit card. Since you are underage, one of your parents would have to be added to the account but if its your own money from your own job, I dont see a problem. |
