When do I give her my credit and atm cards?
At what point in the relationship should a man give over all control of his money to the woman?

I would say when you get married...and of course you two talk about it.....good luck

Julie
Marriage. What is her credit like?
Is she responsible with money?
I hope you have known her long enough to really know these things.

When u think she is trustworthy enough OR she's a betta saver than you. =)

That sounds generous, but it could cause trouble. After marriage there is a pooling of income anyway, but that doesn't include what you brought into the marriage separately; that stays separate unless you deliberately combine it. In any case, talk over your individual situations (credit limits, debts, savings) and decide what will work best. Be careful; this is a touchy subject and women still earn only an average of 65% of what men do, even in this day and age, so you will probably want to take that into account.

momzilla
I am a woman; however, you must trust this lady with your life before giving her complete control. Not all women are good people, so be aware of you finances.

Lots of opinions, no facts.

When you think it is the best option for the two of you, not a moment before. btw, women control 80% of the money in the US so most men are turning over control of their money to their wives/significant other.

alwayscurious
Why should he ever give over complete control at anytime? The woman should not control all the money, nor should the man. I don't know anyone who would willingly give anyone their credit cards. Unless you are married you need to put these thoughts right out of your head unless you want to be taken to the cleaners.

NEVER and this is coming from a woman.

Pete
Never...

Your money is your money and her money is hers (if she works) you each have your own accounts and credit cards, you are responsible for yours and she is responsible for hers. If you want you can put her on your cards as an authorized charger, as long as she puts you on hers as an authorized charger.

Each of your paychecks go to your accounts in your respective banks. When you are married you open a joint account, this account is used solely to pay household bills such as mortgage, electric, gas, garbage pick up , sewer, water, condo fees and the like...NOT your personal credit cards etc...you each deposit money to this account to pay these bills, linked to this account is a program like 'bill pay' or 'quicken', and your bills are set up to pay automatically at the required time. As to the amount of money you deposit in this account, if you both earn, total all the household bills....all, then take a percentage of your earnings and the SAME percentage of her earnings to cover payment. Now as to your personal credit cards etc? what ever is left in your personal accounts pay these. That way you cant over spend..hopefully, anything left after paying credit cards etc, is your 'mad money' to do with what you want.

Never, you crazy bastard. You control your money, since you exercise logic and accountability. If you ever give ALL your control over, you had better be married and absolutely trust your mate.

I trust my wife with everything I have. She pays the bills, but she STILL has her own credit card and her own bills to pay. I love her and trust her, and I mete out my credit card, but that's after many, many years of us living with each other and understanding each other.

Good luck.

fly_independant
when you marry her.

my boyfriend work as a part time baker and one of his collegues was with a woman (not married) for over 3 years, she had a child with him, then left him, maxed out his credit cards so now he has a $20000 debt and paying child support payments. hes in his early 20's.

dont let it happen to you wait unit your married and really trust the woman your with. to make things even simpler dont bring up the issue with your woman at all, saves you explaining and saves her getting angry at you, if shes the one she will understand.

When he's dead. Seriously, why would you give control of your money to another person? Unless you are incapable of taking care of your own finances and she's so responsible that she has already saved a years salary for a rainy day. You should always share in your MARRIED relationship. Personally, my fave idea would be to split up the bills where they are about equal to what you each make % wise. then both of you automatically transfer money into a joint savings account, an emergency fund of sorts. put some away pretaxed from your checks into a 401k type of savings fund then give yourselves an allowance of what you have left to spend. then you can each be responsible for the FAMILY. You can both keep your own atm cards for your own accounts but you should put your SPOUSES name and signature on the account so they can access the money in case of an emergency. If you aren't married then none of this applies because there are no laws to protect you if she decides to rob you blind. as for credit cards you should only have one, an american express that has to be paid off each month. its better that way. if you can't afford to buy it in cash then you can't afford it. the fun is in the anticipation of saving for it and then you can enjoy it so much more.

It all depends... If you don't trust this woman enough to take care of your money, how do you expect to trust her to take care of your children?

I'm a stay at home mom, if my husband EVER came to me and said he was going to give me an allowance, he'd be looking for somewhere else to sleep.

The person who said that is straight up Stupid! Marriage is a partnership. If you're not planning on marrying her don't give up the cards.

bostonianinmo
In his will. And not a day before!

smilez s
Well money is a dicey matter. At no point should you give complete control to your partner. Especially if she's not working and earning herself she will never appreciate it, squander it and think she has every right to do so. Better still give her an allowance every month so she knows her limits as far as money goes.
