my son is 20 months, and he says words like hi, bye, mama, dada, and ect...but he hasn't spoke a full sentence, and i was wondering around what time do they start speaking?

He loves books, and will bring them to me when he wants to read. We read every day, watch educational programs, he's smart and understands everthing, but i'm just wondering when he's finally going to start speaking in sentences |

Out of just life experiance i would honestly say that there is no real telling when a toddler will speak in full coherent setences. the real question is when will the mind of the toddler comprehend the logic behind placing words in rythmic patterns to initialize a full sentence. as a parent u must persistent on communicating with ur child through physical and verbal mannerism's.that why it will be a basic instinct of a
"monkey see monkey do" scenerio. |

around 2- 21/2 they start putting the words together...Doesn't always make much sense though LOL |

Usually by the time they are 2 1/2 they will speak in sentances. At first it will be putting two words together like "Bye, dada" or "want milk". It won't be until they are about 3 that they are adding all the prepositions, etc. |

My eldest did not speak a single word until he was 2 1/2, but at 4 he can already do multiplication and is really advanced in math.
Don't worry -- Albert Einstein did not speak until he was 3 years old - so 20 months is not all bad.
If you're concerned, there's a great book I read called The Einstein Syndrome: Bright Children Who Talk Late by Thomas Sowell http://www.amazon.com/Einstein-Syndrome-Bright-Children-Talk/dp/0465081401 that can help you distinguish whether there is really a problem with the child as against the normal nature of the child |

when hes 2 yrs he will start sayin simple sentences and at age of 2 and half u will see him sayin longer sentences

When he's ready to. Every toddler is different. If you want him to start sooner... read to him & read to him often. |

Well I'm not sure how developed your childs speaking is but my twin brothers started talking in sentences when they were 1 1/2 going 2. And now all they do is talk sentences and they are going on 3....so it should be coming soon!!! :P |

You should take to your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your child's speech patterns, however to answer you question, I will tell you this....I have for children and they all started talking at different ages. My youngest two children are twins and the youngest twin is speaking a slightly better than the older one. I recommend Sesame Street videos we allowed our children to watch them and my 7 year old could count to 20, unassisted when he was 2. |

I have twin 33 month old boys. I believe they started at about 24 months..give or take a little.
I think in general it takes boys a little longer than girls.
Just keep talking and reading to him and soon you won't be able to get a word in edgewise. |

i was bout 2 and my mom said i NEVER talked and a neighbour woman used to say there was sumthin wrong wit me bcuz her son cud talk (even tho u ***** understand him). one day i wake up and i see the woman and say "hi jeanette" clear enough u knew wut i said. then the woman thought there was sumthin wrong wit her child. lol. i hope i helped! :) |

maybe at 2. but thats pretty late. i wouldnt worry but i would still go to the doctors and get a check up. |

When he gets closer to 3. Keep encouraging him and don't coo to him, talk to him like you would an adult, it will show him how to model his speech after yours, and keep up with the reading! His speech is normal for his age. |

Speech varies from person to person, so no worries. My husband likes to joke that he didn't speak until he was in kindergarten.
I think that generally, two or three word sentences by 2 y.o. is expected. My niece was slightly speech delayed and didn't like to talk much. By 2, in NY, they have a free speech therapy program for kids that are a little behind. |

My little brother started at 1 (turning 2) but they weren't full sentences, the doctor was worried but now he's three and I can't get this kid to shut up :D |
