legally yes but at the end of the day he is still your son and providing a little for him after he is 18 is not going to harm you

maybe your ex should chuck your son out when he is 18 & stop keeping him
she can send him to you & you can support him for free
is he no longer your son when he turns 18 do you stop being a parent then

meeno
yes you do. he will be old enough to fend for himself anyway.

what is maintenance? Please be more specific :)

Jen G
What kind of maintenance are you doing on your son?

Jellicoe
If he remains in full-time education, you could find yourself paying for him until he's 21.

Surely parents should do the maximum they can for their offspring and not the least ? I insisted my son went to University and got as high as he could. Unless you leave your children better than your parents left you, what has your life been for?

barefootgal
It depends what was written into your divorce decree. It should say in there.

In my case it was the day my son graduated high school, which was about 3 weeks after he turned 18. I believe that is the law in my state (Wisconsin).

You stop paying maintenance when he reaches 16.

legally, the age for stopping the payments is 17 (i presume this is a UK question!), although if your child is still in full-time education, your ex-partner can extend this until the child is 18.

If your son leaves full time education (at least 12 hours per week) then your payments should end on the first week in September after his 16th birthday. However, If he is between 16 and 19 and decides to continue full time education up to A level or equivalent. Then your payments will will end in the first week of September of the year his education finishes. You will not pay maintenance if his study is at degree level. For more info do not visit the CSA website it is very unhelpful

alan
legally yes

Mate, my son got a job at 17 and worked till he was 18. Then he went back to college and I now have to pay until he's 19.

CSA rules are rough man. I don't mind paying towards him but my ex is making a profit out of this whilst I have to struggle.

Basically, you have to pay if your son is in full-time (over 12 hours!) education (that is non-advanced) until he is 19

Caroline W
sundayman is correct (stops in the September after the child finishes further education) - in my case my eldest is 19 in September 2008 and will finish at college in Summer 2008 BUT then wants to go to University, then the following year my youngest will be hoping to finish college and go to University.
I agree that parents who pay child maintenance should help support their offspring whilst they are at Uni, after all it costs me MUCH more than the £76 a week I currently receive from my ex. (I recently kept records for a month and my children cost me nearly £350 in a month and that WASN'T including food and household bills!)
