wow this is a great question! I think that you will see gas hit 4.00 this summer! There is a possiblity that it might be 5.00 in a couple years before we find an alternative fuel source. I do not believe that we will see gas hit 6.00 for an extended period of time. The only time it will reach that high is if something goes terribly wrong and we have a major gas shortage.
It has effected me incredibly! I am 18 and I almost have my license but know I am born into an age where gas is 3.40 a gallon I can't afford that at all. I am going to make some serious sacrifices to be able to afford. I am saving up to get a hybrid simply because I cannot afford the gas! I hope and pray to God that there is alternative fuel source soon! But once again great question!

The price of gas does not matter, what matters is if your wages keep up with the price of gas.

It will do whatever it does.

I do expect an increase to over $4 (national average) this summer. However, if there is the recession coming that many expect that will further dampen demand.

And as the US economy goes so does the worlds.

However, for the first time I think ever, this is not a supply and demand problem. Oil surpluses have been going up, OPEN is actually looking to cutback production because they are producing more then the world is using. Normally this causes prices to drop.

Now, we have the ethanol problem, we are using this retarded 'fuel' to appease to tree huggers but there is not enough of it. It is also driving up the price of food... except beef. Any guesses why beef is not going up?

That's right, because the ranchers can't afford to feed their cattle anymore (corn is too high). So they are killing more off for meat production, within 2 years beef will sky rocket because the herds will have been thinned out too much.

Anyway, we have oil, we have lots of oil, we have enough untapped oil to last a lifetime and then some. We won't drill for it (again because of the tree huggers) but like I said OIL is not the problem. Refining (in addition to ethanol) is the problem. We are now importing gasoline, we used to import oil and enough made gasoline for us and then some (we used to export it). Now we can't make enough, and no one can build a new refinery (again because of the tree huggers) so we have to have other countries make our gasoline and ship it in.

Then through on top of all that, the fact that there are over 30 'blends' of gasoline each refinery must make because every state has different formulas they require.

We need to clear up regulations that prevent new refineries, we need to drill our own domestic oil, we need to drop ethanol (at least until they can make it without using our food) and we need to streamline the formulas down to a more realistic level like 5 or 6.

Lastly, the good thing about high prices, is that it help drive invention. Someday, someone will come up with an alternative fuel source that actually works efficiently and is cheap and reliable...we don't have one yet contrary to what the tree huggers will tell you.

I will leave you with one last tidbit to think about however.

Gasoline is actually quite cheap. How much is a gallon of milk? Think about the two products...
Milk, you feed a cow, squeeze its teats, boil and bottle and ship. All domestic very simple been doing it for hundreds of years.

Gasoline, go to usually a very bad place to be (Middle East) drill for oil in a desert, fighting off towel heads when needed. Barrel it up, ship across the world to the US, refine it, process it (import some extra we can't make). Blend the formulas, transport it (mostly by a pipeline system) once in the regional areas add in ethanol that had to been trucked in because you can't pipe the ethanol it detroys the pipes (but they want you to put it in your car), retruck it out to local stations.

Gas is cheaper by the gallon then milk.
Think about it.

eddygordo19
$6 a gallon is cheap. When oil hits $300 a barrel, you can expect gas to hit $15 gallon, costing your average SUV owner about $400 to fill up their tank.

Gas should hit $4.00 this summer and probably next year we'll see 5 and 6 dollar gas. This really wouldn't effect me to much because I only work 6 miles away from my house.

Bandit
I think it will rachet to 4.50 this summer, drop down to 3.90 sit there for 4 mos start back up to 4.75-5.00 spring, 5.50 summer, settle to 4.90 winter 2009. All history shows that gas should get to 6.00 by 2010, maybe a bit sooner. If we would put a 3.00 additional tax,we could put the oil barons out of business. Man, food and taxes get any higher, I will probably die. Can't afford medicines now, food is next.

+XMr.HeatX+
wow i sure hope it dosen't reach 6.00 anytime soon

Gas does not affect your job, your bills and your life (If you drive a Volkswagen Jetta with a diesel engine or a Honda with a natural gas engine)

You put "lol" at the end of your question. The sad thing is, it's not that funny. But if gas prices get too high, a lot of people may leave their jobs to work somewhere closer to their homes, or there may be spike in public transporation.

There is a finite amount of oil....it took hundreds of thousands of years to form, and we have blown through most of it in a little over 100 years...

In your lifetime, you will see gas sell for $50 or $100 a gallon.

Jon B
Gas will continue to rise to historic highs as oil becomes more scarce, causing cost-push inflation in every sector of the economy, resulting in inflation and further erosion of the buying power of the Dollar. Oil itself is whats known in economics as an inelastic good, meaning that the rise in price will have little effect on your buying decision.

Feeling the monetary crunch both directly, through the direct purchase of gas for transportation and heating, and indirectly, through cost-push inflation, Households will have less income to spend, hurting the lower class the most, and generally thinning the middle class.

A decrease in spending - a result of less household income- can result in employers cutting jobs to reduce costs and stay competitive.

The sooner we are able to kick oil to the curb, the better for all of us.
