When you are charged an overdraft fee from the bank, do you ever get any of the money back?

No, and you also have to make the check good and may have a fee that the merchant charges. For example: You write a check for $20.00. And there is no money in your checking acct. The bank will charge a fee. And return the check as NSF(non sufficient funds) to the merchant. The merchant will the want the $20.00 plus a returned check fee. So you will actually have 2 fees , the bank fee, and the fee the merchant charges. THat range from 25-35 dollars. So that $20.00 bad check will cost you:

$20.00 to make it good to the merchant
$25.00 fee from the bank
$25.00 fee from the merchant
----------
$75.00 for the twenty dollar check. (minimum, some banks and merchants have been raising these fees lately.)

Not unless you can convince the bank to give the money back. That is pretty unlikely since banks have those fees there to keep people from writing bad checks and also to make some money for themselves. I have heard of people convincing banks to refund the money though.

Not unless the fee was due to a bank error.

The only chance of getting it back is if the overdraft happened because of a bank error.

And, since it is the bank that will determine whether they were in error, I would have to say no.

If it is the first time that you go over your balance, then sometimes the bank will reverse the overdraft charge. If you repeatedly overdraw your account, the bank is not going to reverse the charges. If the overdraft is due to fraudulent charges, the bank will reverse the charges as well.

not unless it was a bank error

Typically, no, but if you go in and discuss the situation with someone at the bank, they may be sympathetic to you (especially if this is the first time it's happened) and refund the money to you.

Overdraft fees are helpful to the bank's profitability, though, they stink for the customer.

Fight On!
If the overdraft fee was generated by the bank's computer in error, then yes, but you'll probably have to demand it. If it was your fault and you don't have lots of money in the bank, they probably won't refund it. Having overdraft protection DOES NOT prevent you from getting overdraft fees to my knowledge. They just change the name of the fee to access your overdraft funds.
I once was charged 3 or 4 overdraft fees in one day. I showed the bank that if they had paid the checks in another order, there would have only been one fee. They credited the rest but made some other mistake. After they made another mistake, they just credited all of them. I did have $20K-$40K in my accounts. I'm sure that helped.

thethingzuneed
of course not.

Nope. Unless you have overdraft protection on your account.

Per your last question--

You insist you "speak the truth". You speak the truth as YOU see it. There is at least as much evidence against all of your vegetarian claims as there is for them. You cherry pick the evidence you WANT to believe in.

"Stalk" you? Oh please. You chicks with the "stalking". Do you even know what "stalking" means? It's a freakin' email-- what are you afraid of? You honestly think I care enough to "stalk" you Ms. Self-Important?

You asked a question --I answered it. It's your whole tone that makes people pissed at you. If you can't hear it-- I can't help. Don't ask if you're not going to buy the answer.

No. Only way to get it back is if it is a bank error and you can prove it. You can also usually get it back if it your first time and you have a good account history. Or if you have alot of money in the bank. Overdraft protection does not stop fees. Overdraft protection protects your credit so you don't bounce checks or it gives you extra money if you are in a tight bind and don't have any. If you are worried about multiple fees then cancel overdraft protection and then you might have multiple bounced checks which ruin your credit and still give you fees. So kind of a coin toss.

You can always go or call the bank about it. I know the last time I had an overdraft fee they reversed the charge. It was not a regular occurance for me. They also warned me they can do it like 1-3 times a year depend on situation and how often I abused it. I bank with WAMU
