When you file for bankruptcy you cant have a bank account would they find out if you had one and didnt use it?

Additional Details
thanks for your help make sence to declare it then to be on the safe side

Yes they could find out. That is especiallly true if it is an interest bearing accounnt. The bank files statements with I.R.S. for interest.
This would be fraud. There is no statute of limitations for fraud. Thus, legal action could be taken many years from now.(In other words, it would always be haunting you.) When the fraud ois discovered, it opens the door for othere things to be investigated.
The fraud, if prosecuted and convicted, would disqualify you from many things: jobs, many volunteer organizations, etc. It would be onne record, and banks could deny the opportunity to do business with them. In other words, you could be denied the opportunity to open an account.
How do you think you would be able to restore credit, if criminal fraud is added to the bankruptcy? I am a mortgage broker. I know that is sufficient reason to turn down a loan.

Probably, but if not used and no balance in it then wouldnt matter much.. I there was money in it and not declared then that is a serious matter. I think the bank would advise the authorities.

if you keep the account and use it after you are discharged you run the risk of having your money seized. The bank will most likely close the account as they regulary do credit searches. You can still get a basic bank account after bankruptcy.

Ariana
When you are declared bankrupt you are put on a list .That is issued to all banks . They would automatically close your account.

if your not going to use it the bank close inactive accounts after a short period, best stay above board bankruptcy is bad enough.. don't add dishonesty as well....

As said by others the jurisdiction you are in may make a difference.

If in the UK then see http://www.insolvency.gov.uk

Lots of information on bankruptcy and its effects. (needs a pdf reader)

You must declare every bank account you have upon bankruptcy. Failing to do so is serious.

Upon filing for bankruptcy it is possible that your bank account will be closed. You may therefore want to make alternative arrangements for receiving your wages and paying bills. Following the bankruptcy order it is possible that your current bank may re-open your account or provide you with another.

Alternatively, you may wish to turn to another bank for a "basic bank account" - sometimes called "instant access accounts" - where you will be offered basic banking facilities.

ADD: I believe you're in the UK, so this answer applies to your situation. In that case, Lea is quite wrong, she's quoting some American stuff.

Not sure where in the world you are, but in the UK at least you CAN have a bank account - in fact, even if you are out of work and on benefits you have to have a bank account as this is the only way they are paid these days. The banks don't advertise the fact but by law they have to offer what is called a "basic" account with no frills especially for bankrupts.

Whatever you do, don't lie to the official receiver. Declare everything. Don't add fraud to your list of problems.

That would be foolish on your part. Open an account when it is over. Lying can cause your debts to not be discharged.

Why Bankruptcy Have you thought about an IVA there are plenty of companies out there also Bankruptcy will affect your credit rating in years to come

You can go to google.com and type in legalhelpers and you can find out alot about bankruptcy.. All you have to do is list any bank accounts with money in it for the last 6 months before filing..If no money going thru it then its not an issue. Your attorney can advise you of all of this once you go..Frank and Colin gave you bogus information with their answers so don't listen to that because it does not apply to you.. and Joker said it would be discharged but he means dismissed.. You want your bankruptcy to be discharged because that means all went well.. You should be fine but make sure your attorney is up on everything and you don't end up with an empty bankruptcy or with a bankruptcy mill.. good luck
